The Next Level: The Games of September 2011

Autumn – and the crazy Fall gaming schedule – is upon us. There’s so much coming out in the first week of September alone that we here at Warp Zoned are reeling with undisguised glee… and yes, just a touch of fear. Read on to see what we’re excited about in the insanely huge list of September releases.

I know there are a lot of games I should be excited about this month (and thank god the Summer drought is over), but I’m really having a hard time with it. Rise of Nightmares looks absolutely awesome, but I don’t have a Kinect. Ditto with Resistance 3, I haven’t made the PS3 plunge yet. Star Fox 64 3D, same story. It’s one of the greatest games of all-time, but a 3DS is outside my budget right now. Man, being a gamer with adult responsibilities sucks!

What I am truly excited about is the mid-month release of Radiant Silvergun on the Xbox Live Arcade. Ikaruga is one of the greatest space shooters ever (almost, but not quite, better than Star Fox 64) and getting a chance to play its predecessor after a decade-and-a-half is extremely exciting. Bring it on, Treasure!

Dude. September. I thought we were friends. What is going on here? Do you have any idea what you’re doing to me? September 6th alone is going to kill me – I want Dead Island, Disgaea 4, Driver: San Francisco (vamanos! vamanos!), Resistance 3, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. The sad reality is that I can afford one, and that one will most likely involve Chimera. Other than that, I am seriously, absolutely, completely ready for the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, which has been a long time coming. There’s going to be much sweat and tears when I finally open that and play it – I intend to play Ico again first, and then tackle Shadow (I will not cry when I kill those giant rambling beasts this time. I won’t!!). I can’t wait to hold Yorda’s hand again and sit on the couch with her. *Sigh* <3 Ryan Littlefield

Oh September, let’s put it this way. Disgaea 4 has been preordered. White Knight Chronicles II will hopefully be in my PS3 by the month’s end. Resident Evil 4 HD will make me hurl my controller into the air conditioning vent next to my TV while carrying Ashley away from the zombies, and will soon after likely be GameShared (stolen) by Nicole Kline. Shin Megami Tensei Persona 2: Innocent Sin is tempting me by the day. Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection is $40, in HD, and looks beautiful. That’s a bargain to me. My wallet will be bleeding by the time this month ends. I’ll just fill it with homemade applesauce as a means to salt the wounds and prepare for October, but, gosh – this is going to be an insane and awesome (insanely awesome) month for one Ryan Littlefield.

It is the fall and games have begun to fall from the trees. Like dying leaves, bodies of zombies will be dropping everywhere. Dead Island looks to be an interesting blend of Fallout 3 and Dead Rising. Driver: San Francisco will let me fulfill my lifelong dream of being Jason Statham from The Transporter. I might finally cave and get a 3DS so I can do a barrell roll and kill Uncle Andross in Star Fox 64 3D. After that, I think the rest of the month will be taken up by the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Oh, the joy of leaping from a horse onto the back of a giant living mountain. Can’t wait!

September is scary. After such a quiet, boring summer for gaming, September is a shock to the system. It starts out right away for me, with Driver: San Francisco. I’m cautiously optimistic that the game will be a return to form after years of futility, and even though its new concepts can be hokey sounding, they could make the game very interesting. I’m also interested in Resistance 3, but it’s not something I’ll need to play right away. I’m mildly interested in White Knight Chronicles II. I thought the original was decent enough, so I’m curious to see how it continues… but like Resistance 3, I don’t feel the need to wait in line on day one.

The odd thing about September is much of the good stuff is… old stuff. High-definition ports of Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 4? Yes, please! As two of my three favorite Resident Evil games, I will buy them… again. Ditto for the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Admittedly, it’s mostly for Ico, but still. Rounding this theme out is Persona 2: Innocent Sin. As the lone game in the Persona franchise to not see a US release, I’m eager to give it a run for the very first time.
