IGN plans to shutdown 1UP, GameSpy, UGO

Wow. We don’t normally discuss the business dealings of other websites here at Warp Zoned, but this is too big to pass up. An internal memo from Ziff Davis CEO Vivek Shah has confirmed that 1UP, GameSpy, and UGO are not long for this world.

Ziff Davis purchased IGN Entertainment and all of their affiliated websites earlier this month and now they’ve decided to clean house. Ziff Davis wants to “Simplify and Focus” the IGN brand, which will result in “Winding down 1UP.com, UGO.com and GameSpy.com” and the closure of the IGN Pro League.

Some 1UP, GameSpy, and UGO employees will be transferred to IGN while the remaining employees will be laid off. IGN will offer some kind of service to help these employees as Shah said, “[L]et’s do what we can to help these employees as they seek new opportunities.”

It’s currently unknown when all of these changes and closures will occur, but we wish everyone affected by this situation the best of luck in finding a new job.
