The Essential Guide to Next-Generation Games: Version 1.0

essentialnextgen-header

With the Wii U already in stores and Sony set to announce the first details of the PlayStation 4/Orbis tomorrow, I think it’s safe to say that the next generation of consoles is upon us. But what games will this brave new world bring us? For now, most of the titles that will be available for the PS4 and Xbox 720/Durango are shrouded in mystery. Even the majority of the Wii U’s 2013 lineup is one big question mark.

Thankfully, your friendly neighborhood Warp Zoned editors have compiled a status report on 67 next-generation games known to be in existence. You can read all about our findings, after the break.

Note: All multiplatform Wii U games have been excluded from this list.

Notes: Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets jumped ship to THQ Montreal a few yers ago to work on 1666. Now, he’s back in the Ubisoft fold and we’re still no closer to learning what 1666 actually is. And we probably won’t know until the next generation begins.

The 90s Arcade Racer

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nicalis
Developer: Nicalis/Antonis Pelekanos

Platforms: Current-Generation Consoles, Next-Generation Consoles, PC
Publisher: Sega

Notes: It’s based on the Alien franchise and Creative Assembly (of Total War fame) is making it. That’s all we know.

Assassin’s Creed 4

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: TBA
Tentative Release Date: Late 2013/Early 2014
Notes: Ubisoft is working on another Assassin’s Creed game for release late this year or early next year. With Assassin’s Creed III ready for the Wii U’s launch, number four will likely make an appearance on any additional systems available by then.

Bayonetta 2

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Platinum Games
Tentative Release Date: 2013
Notes: Nintendo shocked the world when they revealed that Bayonetta 2 would be a Wii U exclusive. We can find out how shocking it is later this year.

Burnout 6

Status: Pre-Production
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Criterion Games
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Criterion is currently gathering ideas for a sixth Burnout game, but it’s unlikely we’ll see it anytime soon.

Destiny

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, Next-Generation Consoles TBA
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Bungie
Tentative Release Date: 2014
Notes: Bungie’s Destiny is a “shared-world” sci-fi shooter (because, of course it is) with music by Paul McCartney and a four-game plan that will see Destiny 4 presumably released in 2020.

Dragon Age III: Inquisition

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: BioWare
Tentative Release Date: Late 2013
Notes: Dragon Age III was announced in September for release on “unspecified platforms.” If that’s not code for “next-generation systems,” I’ll eat a suit of leather armor.

Evolve

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Take-Two Interactive
Developer: Turtle Rock
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Turtle Rock’s multiplayer shooter was purchase by Take-Two at the THQ asset auction. We don’t know anything about the game beyond the title and the genre (and the title was only revealed thanks to THQ’s bankruptcy papers), so a next-generation release seems likely.

Fable 4

Status: Rumored
Platforms: Xbox 720
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Lionhead Studios
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Peter Molyneux has left the Microsoft-funded comfort of Lionhead for the experimental freedom of his latest studio, 22 Cans. But before he left, he revealed that plans for Fable 4 were in place. It seems unlikely that Microsoft would drop one of their biggest franchises even though Molyneux is no longer with the company, so an Xbox 720 release for the next game in the series seems likely.

Game & Wario

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: Spring/Summer 2013
Notes: Nintendo’s next minigame collection will be available this Summer (for the same description, see Wii U Party as well).

Developer: Polyphony Digital
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that Gran Turismo 6 is in devleopment, but it’s unknown if the game will come to the PS3 or PS4. Using the five-year gap between GT4 and GT5 as a guide, Gran Turismo 6 should be released sometime around 2015, just in time for the PS4.

Halo 5

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Xbox 360 (Announced), Xbox 720 (Rumored)
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: 343 Industries
Tentative Release Date: 2014
Notes: Microsoft first announced Halo 5 during E3 2011 when they described Halo 4 as “the dawn of a new trilogy for the Xbox 360.” Since then, the consolemaker has described the game as “platform agnostic,” hinting that it may be available for the Xbox 720 as well or exclusively.

Hitman 6

Status: Pre-Production
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix Montreal
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Square Enix’s newest internal team has begun development on the next game in the Hitman franchise.

Homefront 2

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Consoles TBA, PC
Publisher: TBA
Developer: Crytek
Tentative Release Date: 2013/2014
Notes: Homefront 2 was announced back in 2011 for the PC and unspecified consoles. And it’s very possible (but unconfirmed) the game is headed for next-generation systems. Especially in light of Crytek’s desire to delay the game to ensure it’s as good as it can be.

Human Element

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: PC, Consoles TBA
Publisher: TBA
Developer: Robotoki
Tentative Release Date: 2015
Notes: Human Element is a co-op zombie shooter from Robotoki, a new studio founded by Infinity Ward’s former Community Manager, Robert Bowling.

The Legend of Zelda for Wii U

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Eiji Aonuma, Nintendo’s overseer of all things Zelda, has revealed that the publisher plans to “rethink the conventions of Zelda” for the next game in the series. Aonuma didn’t come out and say the words “open-world Zelda,” but he came very close. He also strongly hinted that the next Zelda game might contain a co-op mode of some kind.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: Fall 2013
Notes: A high definition remake of the divisive GameCube adventure. It’ll include Off-TV Play and a “tune up [to] the overall game experience.”

Lego City Undercover

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: TT Games
Tentative Release Date: March 18
Notes: The first original “Lego _____” game developed by TT Games is this Grand Theft Auto-inspired romp that stars a daredevil cop named Chase McCain.

Mario Kart for Wii U

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Officially announced less than a month ago, Mario Kart for the Wii U will make its public debut at E3 2013.

Metal Gear Solid 5

Status: Pre-Production
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Kojima Productions
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is famously secretive when it comes to what he’s working on, but here’s what we know… Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is the next game in the series and it’s in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Kojima has also revealed that Ground Zeroes is a prequel story that leads into Metal Gear Solid 5. And considering the development time of a single MGS game, the fifth game in the main series is likely in development for next-generation consoles.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Tentative Release Date: March 19
Notes: Capcom’s Monster Hunter series has never caught on in America like it has in Japan. The publisher will try again next month with this Wii U-enhanced remake of the third game in the series.

Mortal Kombat 10

Status: Pre-Production
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has confirmed that preliminary work on the next game in the series has begun within NetherRealm Studios.

Pikmin 3

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: Spring/Summer 2013
Notes: Originally scheduled to be a Wii U launch title, Pikmin 3 has been pushed back to a Spring or Summer 2013 release.

Pokemon Scramble U

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Tentative Release Date: Spring 2013
Notes: The third game in the “Pokemon Scramble” series (released in the US under the title “Pokemon Rumble”) will be added to the Wii U eShop this Spring. An American release has yet to be announced, but the first two games made it across the Pacific, so surely the third will as well.

Project Gotham Racing 5

Status: Rumored
Platforms: Xbox 720
Publisher: Microsoft Studios
Developer: Lucid Games
Tentative Release Date: 2013
Notes: Lucid Games is comprised of several former developers from Bizarre Creations, the team that created the original Project Gotham Racing. According to their website, they’re working on something racing-related for 2013, but PGR5 is just a rumor for now.

Saints Row 4

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: Deep Silver
Developer: Volition
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Deep Silver jumped into the big leagues with their purchase of the Saints Row series at the recent THQ auction. Work on the fourth entry in the series continues at Volition, but a planned 2013 release date seems less and less possible all the time. A next-generation release for Saints Row 4 isn’t assured, but I’d say it’s likely.

Scram Kitty

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: TBA
Developer: Dakko Dakko
Tentative Release Date: 2013
Notes: I’ll let Eurogamer handle the description of Scram Kitty: “Scram Kitty lives in the TV, and you play the buddy on rails in what’s essentially a 2D shooter, although it’s one that seeks to pursue all the eccentricities of the Wii U. Right now, that means that you whiz about the interior of spaceships disposing of enemies with colourful little jets of gunfire as you bounce and grind off networks of rails. It is, if you’re after a lazy comparison, a little like Smash TV getting together for a playful tea party with Jet Set Radio.”

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: Wii U
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Intelligent Systems/Atlus
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: Japan loves a good crossover and they’re getting a big one in Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. Details are scarce, but hopefully we’ll learn more soon.

Star Wars 1313

Status: Officially Announced
Platforms: TBA
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: LucasArts
Tentative Release Date: TBA
Notes: It’s unknown if LucasArts’ “grim and mature” new entry in the Star Wars video game canon is a next-generation game, but the company is working on at least one next-gen game and Star Wars 1313 is probably it.
