The Games of November 2013

gamesofnovember2013-header

They’re finally here. Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One will be available on store shelves this month. Have you been saving your pennies to purchase a next-gen console on day one? Or did the fizzy fast food fairy gift you with a free one? But if you’re not ready to make the next-gen leap, remember, there’s still plenty of current-generation games coming this month (and beyond) to keep all of us busy for a long time. So what’s the staff of Warp Zoned looking forward to in the 11th month of 2013? Read on to find out…

Next-generation smext-generation, there’s a new Mario game coming! Each trailer for Super Mario 3D World has been more charming than the last and I can’t wait to control the portly plumber and his skinny sibling once more. The addition of a playable Princess Peach (also the first time she hasn’t been kidnapped in a “main series” Mario game since the late 80s) is just icing on the cake. I missed XCOM: Enemy Unknown last year, so the release of XCOM: Enemy Within is high on my priority list. The so-called ultimate edition of the game includes last year’s award-winning game and a huge new expansion that adds mechs, mutants, and more mayhem to the proceedings. I think it’s a buy this time.

And as for those next-generation consoles… I’m mostly looking forward to games with 2014 release dates, but the idea of a new Killer Instinct is almost too intriguing to pass up. Trust me, it’s a 90s thing.

While the next next-generation consoles are debuting this month, my excitement has already peaked. Microsoft has done so many U-turns with the Xbone that its perpetually trapped in a British roundabout, while the numerous delayed games on the PlayStation 4 has made the whole thing a bit of an anti-climax.

If we learned one thing from the previous generation, it was do not buy the first batch of consoles. There has been a mud slinging contest recently (possibly dirty PR tactics on both sides of the fence), suggesting the Xbox One’s “live” demos at various events this year have been powered by high end PCs, while other reports say that the PS4 is overheating within an hour and causing the Red Line of Death (which I don’t think should be given the acronym RLoD, but rather RedLode – let’s make it sexy).

Although I am a MASSIVE Assassin’s Creed fan who enjoyed the hell out of the third one, I’m holding off buying Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag until I see just how different the current and next-generation versions are. I will however be picking up Super Mario 3D World. I mistakenly wrote it off when it was first teased, but the last trailer showing a shedload of super suits and abilities made me remember just how much fun Mario games can be.

Up until a few weeks ago, the only game I would have been interested in this month was The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I love me a good top-down Zelda title, and since A Link to the Past is my favorite of the series, this one was a no-brainer. So yes, until recently that would have been my only purchase during the month of November.

Then fate stepped in and gave me a free PlayStation 4 courtesy of Taco Bell. Now, I’ve had to make some additions to my must-have titles for November. First, I’ll be playing Knack as it comes with the system. Also, I changed my pre-order of Lego Marvel Super Heroes to the next-gen version. Finally, I’ll be spending some time with Killzone: Shadow Fall – which should be interesting as I’ve never played a Killzone game before.

Happy next-gen, everyone!
