Warpback: What We Played in December 2013

warpback-1213-header

Santa has lightened his load and delivered presents with care. And publishers released new consoles for gamers in a pair. There was so much to play in December that we just had to share. We tried to sample it all… from Mario’s latest quest to reach the Flag Pole to Rockstar’s trio and everything they stole. I realize these rhymes are more than a little staid, so hit the jump to see what the Warp Zoned staff played.

Mario, Mario, Mario. No matter how old I get, Mario makes me feel the same age. Nintendo’s mascot received a new game in November, Super Mario 3D World, and when I’m not away from my TV at holiday parties or doing end-of-year work stuff, I’ve been slowly working my way through the game. The 2D/3D hybrid style is interesting and while it’s not my favorite Mario of all time, I’m definitely liking it.

And since its December 31, I don’t think I can let the “Year of Luigi” come to a close without downloading Dr. Luigi later today.

I played an obscene number of games in December. Once school finished up, it was nothing but video games! I started up Papers, Please, and I’ve had a blast with it so far. I also started and finished Fez, Hotline Miami, LittleBigPlanet PS Vita, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, after which I started up Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

I’ve also been playing lots of We Are Doomed, which was one of our “PAXpocalypse” selections from this year’s PAX Prime. And since I’m home on break, Anthony Amato and I have played a ton of co-op games together – Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW, Diablo III, Ibb and Obb, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and Risk of Rain. And he also just got a brand new computer, so we hooked up his old computer to the television in our living room and decided to start Torchlight II again at the beginning. Oh, and I finally went back to InFamous 2, which I’m trying to beat before the year ends. Basically this month has been full to the brim with video game playing!

After weeks of slogging away, I finally finished Grand Theft Auto V (well, the main storyline at least), just in time for Christmas.

I am now gliding over the darkened streets of Gotham in Batman: Arkham Origins. it really comes across as a massive DLC package for the superior Batman: Arkham City. So much about the game feels familiar, which is not a bad thing in itself, but the first two games managed to be very different from one another. Arkham Origins feels like a step sideways rather than forwards. I’m really hoping Rocksteady has a Justice League game in the pipeline, where we can play as Green Arrow or Superman, as Batman’s cape is wearing a bit thin.

This month was all about Lego Marvel Super Heroes. Frankly, I didn’t have much time for anything else. There’s so much to do in this game that it sucked up my entire month. And I loved every second of it. The rest of my spare time was spent reliving the past with my 3DS. I downloaded Mega Man II, and it’s just as fun as it was when I was eight years old. I also downloaded 3D Streets of Rage, which is definitely a must-buy if you’re a fan of the original – or the beat ’em up genre in general.

Happy New Year everyone!
