Warpback: What We Played in November 2014

warpback-1114-header

November is always a big month for new game releases and the Warp Zoned staff dove in face first, trying our hands at games such as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, LittleBigPlanet 3, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, and the Evolve “Big Alpha.” And, of course, there’s the October spillover and our gigantic backlogs to consider. Want to join our conversation? Then I suggest you take a gander at everything we played after the break.

I spent the early part of November the same way I spent my October… hacking and slashing an alternate Hyrule in Hyrule Warriors on my Wii U and grinding my way through Angry Birds Transformers on my iPod. Both games are still great fun, but they were pushed aside recently for last month’s biggest new game… Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions.

Lucid Games’ threequel to a pair of beloved twin-stick shooters completely hits the mark and can stand proudly beside Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (which I also played this month to rev up my rusty GeoWars skills). The new Adventure Mode, a first for the franchise, has me absolutely addicted. And the 3D grids, while disorienting at first, have become second nature to me. But I think I’ve most been drawn to all of the little changes Lucid made to the Geometry Wars formula. The addition of Drone companions and special attacks (known as Super States) was a stroke of genius. And that barely cracks the surface. If you do plan to play Dimenions, just wait until you get to the utterly unique “Nufo Flow” level or the punishing “Endurance” level.

Finally, I commemorated the announcement that a new Battletoads game might be in development by replaying the original Battletoads on my NES. I still suck at it and I still hate those ******* hoverbikes.

I did a ton of gaming in November. I started it off with the Evolve “Big Alpha,” which I found to be kind of disappointing. I hit the random button and every single time I ended up playing the Monster, and there was no tutorial at all, so I got annihilated. I still have high hopes for the final game, and I hope the beta is much longer! I finished up Pokemon Platinum and switched gears right into Pokemon Alpha Sapphire directly after – I only had a few days of no Pokemon in between, and I started up Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations during that time. I played and finished LittleBigPlanet 3 in a startlingly short amount of time, after which I went right back to Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – I have a hard time putting those down!

As well as revisiting Mario Kart 8 thanks to the Legend of Zelda DLC Pack, my Wii U has been getting a work-out with both Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2. All of which are absolutely stunning! Not to neglect my PlayStation 3, as well as constantly dying in the original Dark Souls, I finally got to grips with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which is every bit as fun as the last two titles.

This month a majority of my time was spent cowering in the corner due to Alien: Isolation. It is turning out to be quite the challenging title. I enjoy a good stealth game like anyone else, but boy howdy is this some impressive A.I.. I also played Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition with my son, and we both took on the challenging task of obtaining Music Discs. Through a lot of trial and error, and a completely destroyed landscape, we finally obtained four of them – which is an amazing accomplishment! I also played Super Smash Bros. For 3DS even though I suck online. I wish I could play the Wii U version, but alas I must wait another 24 days.
