Warpback: What We Played in January 2015

warpback-january-header

One thing is certain: there was a lot of mileage put on Wii Us here at Warp Zoned in the month of January. We played a little bit of Toad, a little bit of Kart, and a whole lot of Smash! There was also some Pokemon, and a bunch of iOS gaming. Read on to find out the full list of what we played in January!

January didn’t have much in the way of new releases, so I loaded up every game I played in December for another go-round. Mario Kart 8 and its awesome expansion have yet to leave my Wii U, while the free-to-play Peggle Blast is my iOS game of choice. I’ve also continued to pick away at the “Gatherer” Achievement (Collect A Million Geoms) in Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. About 600,000 down, another 400,000 to go.

School started up again for me, so I’m sad to say what I did most of this month was homework. But I managed to find some time for video games!

I’m still riding my crazy wave of JRPGs – though I haven’t finished Kingdom Hearts, Persona 3 Portable, or Pokemon Alpha Sapphire yet. I probably have a combined 80 hours on the three of them together, though. So I must be close with at least one of them, right? I played (and reviewed) Ascension on the PC, which I was really disappointed in, and which just made me go back to the iOS version of the game. I needed to pick up the latest expansions, which I’m really enjoying.

Anthony Amato and I went back to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which we’re trying to finish so we can get to the next one, which came out recently. And I’ve been getting my butt kicked in Dying Light, which I’m terrible at so far, but I’m still enjoying it. As always, we played some Super Pole Riders and TowerFall when we had company, and I logged plenty of hours on my favorite phone game, Triple Town.

I actually managed to get a good few gaming hours in this month, despite having many, many work deadlines, but my favourite of them all has been Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. It’s just so cute and so much fun. My girlfriend and I ended up screaming “Ready for Adventure!” after Captain Toad said it at the start of every level. I really hope there’s a sequel. And I continued pounding players in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, along with my shiny new Toon Link Amiibo.

I also finished Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which made me all kinds of excited for whatever Gearbox is cooking up for Borderlands 3.

And I officially gave up on Dark Souls. I bought it ages ago in the bargain section, thinking it could not be as hard as people make out. It is hard, but in part because the controls are so bloody annoying. I might pick up the sequel as I have read it’s improved, and I do like the challenge, just not a futile one.

This month I played (and reviewed) Alien: Isolation, which is just as devilish as everyone says it is. It is one of the only games I’ve played that is as real-to-life as possible – despite having a giant Xenomorph trying to kill you every second. I also played Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition, and was pleasantly surprised to see the long-awaited horse update! Now I’m preparing to take on a Wither, which according to my son is no easy task.

I also just got into Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire. I’m pretty excited, as this is my first time playing the series. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m having a lot of fun doing it. I also played quite a bit of Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that one.
