Warpback: What We Played in March 2015

warpback-march-header

The Warp Zoned crew was mostly digging into their backlogs in the cold month of March! Some of us did get to play new games at PAX East, as well as game jam games, but for the most part, we were all just hibernating. Read on to see what we played to pass the time!

Last month, I got to spend three days at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center for the 2015 edition of PAX East. There were wall-to-wall games to play and I came away with a bunch of new favorites including 20XX, Axiom Verge, The Behemoth’s Game 4, Extreme Exorcism, Giagantic, Just Shapes & Beats, Knight Squad, and Rive. I also discussed why I loved each and every one in our PAX East 2015 PAXpocalypse List. Other highlights from this year’s PAX East include Nintendo’s squid-based/squad-based shooter Splatoon, Sonic-like platformer Freedom Planet, and very cool puzzle platformer Magnetic By Nature. So many indie teams had interesting games on display and I wish I had time to write about all of them. Perhaps a delayed PAX East 2015 Playlist is in order…

After getting home, I continued my assault on Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, my favorite game from 2014. More shapes have been shot and more geoms have been collected, but the Evolved update (which launched March 31 and adds so many new levels) now makes it my favorite game of 2015 (so far) too.

March was spent largely doing nothing other than running the Kickstarter for my card game, Resistor, but I did get a little bit of video gaming in! I played We Are Doomed, Final Fantasy Type-0, and Gigantic at PAX East. I also played a little Lego Batman and Binding of Isaac, and finally opened up Diablo III for the PS4 (I got it for Christmas – whoops!). I wrapped up Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light as well. Other than that, I played a ton of game jam games at both Cipher Prime and the Penn Play jam, as well as slowly making my way through Persona 3 Portable – I’m nearly there!

I finally finished Dark Souls, crying over blistered hands. I’ll definitely be picking up Dark Souls II and Bloodborne when I pick up my PlayStation, although I may have to beg Sony to show mercy on me. But now that my 70 hours of constantly dying is finally over, I’ve returned to Assassin’s Creed: Rogue on PS3, as well as Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U. Expect an overdue review soon!

Axiom Verge. It’s awesome. You need it now. Don’t question me; just go buy it. You won’t be sorry. I have had so much fun with that title, and it’s on sale this week! So now you have no reason not to get it. Other than that, I spent time with the freemium 3DS title Pokemon Shuffle. It’s a fun, match-3 type of puzzle game. I enjoy the limited nature of the game; it’s perfect for short bursts. Other than that, I didn’t play a whole heck of a lot else.

Enjoy Axiom Verge!
