Warpback: What We Played in May 2015

warpback-may-header

The new release schedule was pretty empty in the month of May, thankfully the Warp Zoned staff had a hefty batch of backlog titles to work through. And the month did close out with a Splatoon-shaped bang, which has enthralled at least two members of the staff.

What did you play in May? You can find out what games we dove into after the break.

I started the month of May out with the same trio of games I played for most of April.

Mortal Kombat X is still a great one-on-one fighter from NetherRealm Studios and a great followup to 2011’s Mortal Kombat. I completed the Story Mode and while it gets a little silly in the second half, the game’s conclusion sets up an incredible new status quo for the Mortal Kombat universe. After 25 years, I can imagine some franchise fatigue has set in for the developers, but I honestly cannot wait to see where the story goes next.

Yacht Club Games added two special battles to Shovel Knight as it made its PlayStation and Xbox One debut last month. In May, I finally reached the Battletoads battle that was hidden within the Xbox One version of the game. The secret level is everything I hoped it would be. If you were a fan of Battletoads back in the day, you owe it to yourself to check out Shovel Knight on the Xbox One. But if you need more convincing, please, read my review. Speaking of reviews, I also put the finishing touches on a review of We Are Doomed after playing it some more during the month of May. We Are Doomed is a pretty great twin-stick shooter, and if you’re a fan of the genre, it’ll definitely keep you busy for a bit.

As May came to a close this weekend, I was able to get my hands on Splatoon, and Nintendo’s first foray into team-based shooters is the most fun I’ve had with my Wii U in a long time. It’s colorful and chaotic and a game you’ll definitely want to try if you’re a fan of Nintendo-published games, shooters, or squids.

I played a ton of games this month! I tried out the charming Jungle Rumble, and while I was on my Vita, I got sucked into Plants vs. Zombies on there. I forgot how much fun I had with that game! Anthony Amato and I played a lot of Towerfall: Ascension – Dark World, which just came out this month. It’s a blast!

I also spent a lot of time this month wrapping up games I’ve been playing for a long time. I beat Persona 3 Portable and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. Anthony and I finished up both the main story and the expansion for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, and we’re having a great time now getting Bounties and doing Nephalim Rifts. I’ve also gone back to a game I got halfway through, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. It feels good to finally be going back and beating games I’ve been working on for ages!

I started May by getting into Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, finishing it fairly quickly. I found that it tied off the “North American Trilogy” rather nicely, although when is Ubisoft going to realise that the best thing about the franchise is the modern day mystery that put players in the shoes of Desmond Miles? Being a faceless, nameless employee of Abstergo is just a bit meh (and too self-referential for my liking). From what I understand, Unity had no modern day section at all, so I think I’ll just skip it.

I also continued to improve my times on Mario Kart 8‘s new DLC, before remembering that I got Pikmin 3 free when I bought the actual game, so I started that as well. I love Pikmin, its so darn cute. And then, just as the month was about to end, Splatoon arrived in the post. I’ve only just started it so I have no opinion on it other than it looks gorgeous!

What a coincidence! I also played Pikmin 3 this month! I didn’t get very far; as I only battled the first boss, but it was quite enjoyable.

The majority of my month was spent playing The Golf Club on the PS4. I am not a big fan of golf, probably because I suck at the game. But video game golf is another beast. And as much as I enjoy playing golf online, It’s so hard to find a game that allows turn-based multiplayer. Luckily, The Golf Club has just that. Plus, the course creation mode means that I’ll have plenty of content to play for quite a while.
