Warpback: What We Played in July 2015

warpback-july-header

Can this lazy Summer get any lazier? Probably… but the Warp Zoned staff is keeping busy with their backlogs and playing a variety of games on their phones. Can’t you just feel the excitement in the air? Maybe you need to know exactly what we’re playing, and you can find that after the break.

While it features more math than I normally expect in my word games, I’ve been putting a lot of time into Spry Fox’s Alphabear on my iPod Touch. The bear designs are pretty inventive and you really have to rack your brain to earn big points after the early levels. The free-to-play game also asks for money a bit more often than I’d like, but it’s fun enough that the $4.99 “Unlimited Play” option is looking pretty good.

To combat an even lazier Summer than normal, my Xbox One has pretty much been permanently locked into Spectra over the last few weeks. It’s not the deepest game in the world, but the arcade racer’s 80s-style aesthetic is pretty great and the soundtrack from Chipzel is outstanding.

This month, I’ve been doing a lot of catching up! I finally started Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, much to my dismay. I also finally got a Wii U! So I’ve been playing it as often as I can, which is, sadly, not very often at all. I jumped right into Super Mario 3D World and Splatoon, and also got EarthBound with my Club Nintendo points (RIP).

Other than that, Anthony Amato and I are still playing Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Edition on PS4, and I’m still playing Professor Layton and the Last Specter. I also spend a ton of time on my phone, it seems – Threes, Words With Friends, and the New York Times Crossword puzzle app have all been big time-wasters for me this month. Oh, and I hopped into Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire to grab a bunch of Mystery Gift Pokemon, and I was delighted to see a new cutscene and an additional episode has been added! I can’t wait to play that DLC.

With all The Last Guardian chit-chat from E3 2015, I finally found a copy of the The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection. I have to say, I am mightily disappointed in what everyone refers to as a classic. While the idea of Colossus is intriguing, the control scheme is horrendous. I kept dying because the hero constantly lost his grip while climbing the Colossus, only to be kicked by its foot. It has since been replaced in my PS3 by the far more enjoyable The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Not really sure I have the time to devote to an RPG of this size, but it was next in my unplayed pile.

On my Wii U, I returned to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (which I forgot I hadn’t completed), as well as keeping my winning streak running on Splatoon, which will probably be ruined now that Nicole has a Wii U.

Nicole isn’t the only one getting new systems! I got a PlayStation Vita this month, and dove into my backlog of PlayStation Plus games. I started playing Terraria, which, while fun, doesn’t seem to grab me as much as Minecraft does. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it the more I get into it, but we’ll see. I also just started playing Fantasy Life on my 3DS, and really enjoy that one. People call it “Skyrim Lite,” and I couldn’t agree more with that sentiment. It’s really a lot of fun and I can see myself losing tons of hours in it.
