Warpback: What We Played in January 2016

warpback-january-header

Here at Warp Zoned, it looks like we all just tapped our backlogs this cold month of January! Read on to see which systems we were playing games on as ol’ Mother Nature snowed most of us in.

Because of its addition to Microsoft’s Games With Gold promotion, I thought January was the perfect time to dive into Killer Instinct for the first time. Like the mid 90s original, I couldn’t quite crack exactly how the game is supposed to work, but I had a surprising amount of fun mashing buttons. And watching a skeleton pirate pound on a wolfman while cackling like a lunatic is always going to be at least a little fun.

I also spent some time in the first month of the year playing The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, last month’s Games With Gold. It’s a nice little action RPG, but it pales in comparison to Diablo III and I can’t see myself going back to it very often.

Finally, I’m still trying my hand at Deathstate, Workinman’s bullet hell/roguelike hybrid. I was slightly less terrible at it last month, so I’m probably going to keep playing it until I can rightfully call myself mediocre.

I didn’t play anything new in January at all! Anthony Amato and I tried to save the world in Broforce, we joined up with Ryan Littlefield and Brianne Galli to play some Jackbox, and we also helped Ryan get his Platinum Trophy in Borderlands 2. Other than that, it was just my old favorites – played a little AlphaBear and Twenty on my iPad, went Trophy hunting in Persona 4 Golden, and basically just tried to avoid Preston Garvey in Fallout 4. It was a great time!

The better question is… what did I not play? I’m still casually playing through Shovel Knight and Yoshi’s Woolly World on the Wii U, while battering away at Batman: Arkham Knight (which has far too many Riddler trophies) on my PS4. I’m also still slogging through Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, as well as starting InFamous: Second Son, and finally getting around to buying Destiny: The Taken King.

I may never finish another game. Ever.

Oh, I’ve already come to terms with the fact that I’ll never finish all my games. But I’ll do what I can. I finally, after years of on-and-off playing, finished Batman: Arkham Origins. I don’t get what the fuss was all about… it wasn’t buggy at all for me. I actually quite enjoyed it.

Shovel Knight was also on my list of games, as I finally downloaded the Plague of Shadows story mode, and I loved playing co-op via the recently-released Shovel Knight amiibo. Other than that, I dabbled in a bit of Rocket League and Guitar Hero Live.
