Warpback: What We Played in March 2017

There’s no doubt that the most talked about game here at Warp Zoned was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild! Even our Switch-less writer got to try it out. But we played a lot more than that during March, so hit the jump to see it all!

I love the Nintendo Switch. Since its launch on March 3, I’ve snuck in a few minutes with Nintendo’s console/handheld hybrid in every room of my house except for the bathroom. Most of that time, easily dozens of hours, has been spent with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Link’s newest adventure is as epic as advertised, and being able to climb any surface and venture in any direction will keep me busy for dozens more.

But Zelda isn’t all the Switch has going for it. Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment is an amazing side-scrolling slasher in the Ninja Gaiden mold. Super Bomberman R is a fun new entry in the venerable franchise… even if it doesn’t blow you away with originality. And Snipperclips: Cut It Out Together is an ingenious puzzle game for one or two players.

Nintendo also made sure I spent a whole weekend parked in front of my Switch with the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire. After six hours with the sequel, it hasn’t strayed very far from the first game yet. But it’s more Splatoon, and that’s all most fans of the franchise will need.

Finally, last month, Zach Gage (the creator of SpellTower, Sage Solitaire, and Really Bad Chess) released Typeshift for mobile devices. The word puzzler adds crossword-style clues to the spinning letter wheels of a cryptex to create a very thinky game that’s fun for a few minutes or a few hours.

The first half of March was me finishing up graduate school, which means I only had time for my usual – Pokemon Go, Pokemon Moon, and Pokemon Picross. And, of course, I had a lot of fun at PAX East! I got to play Pit People, Pyre, Flinthook, The Gardens Between, Graceful Explosion Machine, and I even got to try out The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on my friend’s Switch!

But the real fun began as soon as I finished up graduate school. I wrapped up Dishonored: The Brigmore Witches, then played all of Firewatch, and went back and finished up Titanfall 2, before finally starting Dishonored 2. It’s been amazing!

Pretty much the only game I played was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Hyrule is huge, and I am still enjoying the unhampered exploration of the game. I’ll be sad when this is over, and I really hope Nintendo is considering a new RPG using the same engine, or with a similar approach.

Want to climb that mountain in the distance? Sure, lets do that! Want to cook those apples hanging from the tree? Aye, why not.

March has pretty much been all about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for me, too. I haven’t even tried to fight any of the four Divine Beasts, as I’m having so much fun just roaming the countryside and discovering all that Hyrule has to offer. I have a feeling that this one won’t be completed until autumn.

The only other game I’ve had time for is the PS4 version of Resident Evil 5. My buddy and I picked this up on a whim, as we spent a lot of time playing the Xbox 360 version. I must say, it holds up quite well. We really enjoyed this trip down memory lane, and now that we’ve unlocked unlimited ammo, we’re about to have a lot more fun during our New Game+ run.
