The Games of May 2017

Nearly a dozen new games made their way onto store shelves in the closing days of April, but it looks like we’ll be showered with a smaller collection of new games in May. Thankfully, there’s plenty of interesting titles scheduled to launch over the next four weeks including Injustice 2, Friday the 13th, and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Did we miss your favorite? Read on to find out…

I don’t really follow pro basketball anymore, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for NBA Jam, which is why this month’s upcoming release of NBA Playgrounds has me super excited. Performing superhuman dunks and impossible fakeouts while having a big head is the best way to play basketball.

After the success of the first game in the series, and the equally impressive Mortal Kombat X, I’m also looking forward to Injustice 2. The world that NetherRealm Studios cooked up for their take on the well-worn “Superman Goes Evil” story was great, and the recent deluge of trailers for the sequel promise an even bigger universe to play in.

Finally, I’m cautiously optimistic about Friday the 13th. It seems like developers Gun Media and Illfonic did everything right before the game’s launch. They recruited creator Sean Cunningham, composer Harry Manfredini, stuntman Kane Hodder, and special effects wizard Tom Savini. They also understood that fans want to play as Jason, and made him nigh-invulnerable and able to teleport anywhere. But is it even possible to make a good Friday the 13th game? I guess we’re all gonna find out.

There’s only one game I’m intensely looking forward to in May, and that’s Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia! I have the special edition pre-ordered, and I’m so excited about it. Speaking of special editions, I’m absolutely loving the one for Disgaea 5 Complete. Who knows… maybe this will be the month I get a Switch!

There are two games on my radar this month. The first is an old Kickstarter project, Mojo Bones’s Impact Winter. I really hope it comes to the Switch, as I’m not a big PC gamer, but if need be, I’ll pick it up on Steam. It looks like a great take on the post-apocalypse landscape, and I’m excited to try and survive in the white wastes.

The other one is Deck 13’s The Surge. I really enjoyed Lords of the Fallen, although it never really managed to shake the feeling of being Dark Souls lite. Hopefully, the developers have found their own personality with a fresh franchise.

When I say “Ch-ch-ch,” you say “Ha-ha-ha!” I am so excited for Friday the 13th. I really, really hope this one is going to be good. I loved Left 4 Dead’s multiplayer component, and if Friday the 13th gives me that same kind of experience, it’s going to be a blast. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

I may also pick up Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. Yes, it’s the umpteenth port of the classic fighter, but it also adds a first-person mode as well as couch co-op. So that right there should be worth the price of admission enough.

I’m also kind of torn on Prey. It looks like a good sci-fi horror title, and I do love those, but I may have to wait to hear some impressions before I dive into it…
