Hyrule Warriors Review: A Dynasty Warriors Mod, But In A Good Way

hyrulewarriors-header

Ever since Ocarina of Time, the Legend of Zelda franchise has been near and dear to my heart. When the first trailers for Hyrule Warriors were released, I didn’t know quite what to think about it. It wasn’t quite a Zelda game, really, at least not in the traditional sense. However, as Link bombastically destroyed huge waves of enemies with increasingly over-the-top weapons, I found myself intrigued. Nintendo doesn’t often trust its most popular franchises to parties outside the company, although that has changed in recent years as Retro Studios continues to release solid titles like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Metroid Prime. However, aside from the much maligned CD-i games (that would eventually become fuel for countless YouTube parodies) and Capcom’s handheld entries, Nintendo has rarely trusted another company with the Zelda franchise. In that sense, Hyrule Warriors is a unique animal, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. (more…)

It Came From 19XX: Lethal Enforcers

lethalenforcers-header

The first time I encountered those twin blue and pink light guns, I was eight years old. The new school year had started, Sonic 2 was glued in the port of my shiny new Sega Genesis, and my parents and I were visiting some family friends. I honestly don’t remember who they were, but I would thank them if I could, because we somehow came home with their copy of Lethal Enforcers, complete with the famous Konami Justifiers. These oversized revolvers dwarfed the Nintendo Zapper both in size and coolness. Whether by gift or by accident, these half-remembered friends never saw the game again. (more…)

Uncharted movie bumps Amazing Spider-Man 3 for a 2016 release

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Uncharted film will get a planned release on June 10, 2016, bumping The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to 2018.

This may come as a surprise to some, given that the production team has changed directors and writers multiple times. From David O. Russell’s weird crime family concept, with DeNiro and Pesci as Nathan Drake’s non-canonical father and uncle, to Neil Burger’s short tenure as director, the production has been stuck in development hell for a while.

This version of the film is being written by David Guggenheim, not to be confused with Davis Guggenheim, director of An Inconvenient Truth. David Guggenheim has action credits under his belt with movies like Safe House, and Nicholas Cage vehicle Stolen.  Slightly more promising is the current director Seth Gordon, director of Horrible Bosses and the WarGames remake. More importantly for gamers, he directed the quintessential documentary about what a horrible person Billy Mitchell is (also Donkey Kong), King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

No word yet on whether or not the production team has made the right choice and decided to hire Nathan Fillion to play Drake.

If you can’t be at Comic-Con this year, you can still get in on some of the action if you have a Wii U. Announced in a recent tweet, Nintendo will be opening up the live Mario Kart 8 tournaments to anyone who wants to join… so long as they own a Wii U, and a copy of the game.

The tournaments will start this Friday, with a number of game modes and events, including Bob-ombs only, Frantic Mode, and straight out of a slapstick movie from the 20’s, Banana’s Only. Participants will be taking on the best players from San Diego all weekend, Friday through Sunday. Anyone wishing to join the fun should enter the game’s Tournament Mode, and enter the codes corresponding to the desired event.

InSomnia Kickstarter campaign reaches its goal a week early

Good news for Russian indie developer Studio MONO this morning, as their Kickstarter campaign for InSomnia, a self-described “Dieselpunk” RPG, surpassed its goal of $70,000 this morning, a full week ahead of schedule. “The team and I are very happy with the continued support from our backers. To reach our initial funding target at this stage is amazing and we’re now extremely excited about the possibility of reaching further stretch goals,” said lead developer Anatoliy Necrasov.

This news comes in contrast to their first Kickstarter campaign in late 2013, which raised only $5,000 towards the then-MMO version of InSomnia. The game now promises a real-time RPG experience that can be played either alone, or as a team in co-operative mode. The story takes place on a gigantic retro-futuristic space station, in a 400-year search for a new planet to house what’s left of the human race. Studio MONO is currently planning a December 2015 release for InSomnia.

Best of all, a playable tech demo of InSomnia is available on their Kickstarter page.
