Warpback: What We Played in October 2011

October seemed like a blur here at Warp Zoned. We were so busy trying to keep up with everything that it passed us by in no time! We did snag a few good games, though, while still maintaining our card and board game obsessions. Oh yeah, and we also played some old games as well, from chewing bubble gum with the Duke to leaving a football field covered in blood. Read on to find out all the gory details of what we played in October.

Like a certain wallcrawler swinging from building to building, I bounced around from game to game in October. Obviously, there was Activision and Beenox’s latest Spider-Man game adaptation, Spider-Man: Edge of Time. I swung towards this game for a good portion of October, but it felt more like an expansion to last year’s Shattered Dimensions than a full-fledged game. More on that in the forthcoming review. I also swung back to Radiant Silvergun a bit. Treasure’s classic shooter continues to stay classy in its second month. Finally, I played a few more minutes of Duke Nukem Forever and continue to shake my head at how many years it took to develop.

October was only about two new games for me: Resistance 3 and the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. No other new games so much as appeared on my radar, truth be told. Resistance 3 has been nothing short of a disappointment, but more details about that will be forthcoming in my review. The Ico and Shadow Collection, on the other hand, has proven to be the total opposite: an amazing and cinematic work of art. It doesn’t matter when you last played them, these two timeless classics loving rendered in HD are absolutely worth it. Again, more from me when my review is finished, but for now, spoiler alert: I think everyone should buy it.

Other than those two, I’ve been playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons when I have the time, trying to learn how to play Gamma World, getting in a lot of board game time with games like King of Tokyo and Pandemic, and slowly moving forward in my Blood Bowl league. We play the board game, but I’ve also been practicing as much as I can on both the PC and PSP versions of the game as well. Good times!

October was a busy month for me, but most of my time was spent playing White Knight Chronicles II. And I’m STILL not done! As you can tell, I also played May’s Mystery: Forbidden Memories while I was waiting for Professor Layton and the Last Specter. Oh yeah, and I’m playing that, too.

Other than that, it’s been a lot of Magic: The Gathering for me, because the recently-released Innistrad set is a really cool card set. I just recently got some nice cards for a really nice Artifact deck, so I’ve been working on that too. Hopefully November will bring more of everything!

Sadly, it has been all schoolwork for me this past month. I have not yet delved into the undoubtably awesome Batman: Arkham City. But I did find a few moments to enjoy the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. There is nothing quite like trying to take down a flying colossus in glorious high definition. It brings a whole new level of appreciation to an already dazzling game.

I didn’t really play a whole lot this month. October was busy… I didn’t even get around to buying Forza Motorsport 4! I spent some time with the “HD Collections” family… that being the God of War: Origins collection and the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection. I also did a ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLING STARRRRRRRRRRRRRT (that one’s for you, Ryan!) with the downloadable release of Daytona USA, which provided me with the most enjoyment this month, as you can tell by my review. Nostalgia, it’s a hell of a drug. Otherwise, October was the calm before the November storm.
