Warpback: What We Played in November 2011

Ah, November. We hardly knew ye! You were here and gone so quickly, leaving us with a whirlwind of Black Friday sales as you went. You came in like an adventurer with Drake and Sully, then went out like a sword-swinging Link, and in the middle was Skyrim, Skyrim, Skyrim. With so many great games to choose from, what was the Warp Zoned staff playing? Read on to find out!

The month of November made me thankful for a trio of games: Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Dungeon Siege III: Treasures of the Sun, and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Spider-Man’s latest dimension-hopping diversion from Beenox was a bit of a bust, but it was still a solid Spidey title fans of the wallcrawler will want to grab out of the bargain bin eventually. The Dungeon Siege III expansion went one better and was a fantastic add-on for one of my favorite games of the Summer. And what can you say about Halo? Well, I can’t say much as I haven’t delved beyond the halls of the Autumn in the Anniversary edition and the last time I played a Halo game I still had all my hair.

November was really only about one game for me, and that game was Uncharted 3. When I finished it up, I started right in on the new novel, Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth. I basically spent a huge chunk of my month with Drake and Sully, which, in the grand scheme of things, is not a bad way to pass the time. Other than that, I’ve just been playing a lot of Dungeons & Dragons and board games – Pandemic, Small World, Ascension, and the new Penny Arcade game – Gamers vs. Evil. I’m also in a Blood Bowl league, and a skee ball league (we’re undefeated!), which have been taking up a good chunk of my time! The only other game I’ve been playing is Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart DS in order to prepare for the aptly (yet boringly) named Mario Kart 7. Bring it on, Nintendo! I’m ready for your blue shells.

November was a nice, slow catch-up month for me, despite the newest games flying at us like snowflakes in a windy blizzard. I started out the month by finishing – and reviewingWhite Knight Chronicles II, and immediately jumping into a more well-renowned game – Demon’s Souls. I can’t believe it took me so long to start it, but it will likely take me quite a while to finish it.

Kirby’s Return to Dream Land was a breath of fresh air after dwelling in “RPG Land” for so long. It’s a great homage to Kirby’s original style, and it definitely plays well. If you liked Kirby’s Epic Yarn, or even if you wanted more of a challenge, I would recommend checking this one out. God of War II made a few brief appearances when I wanted a little bit of a different pace in my platforming, and it’s tempting me to revisit the original on my God of War Collection, even if just for the trophies. I started Star Ocean: First Departure for PSP, and I’m actually blown away by the visuals of it, especially taking into account the fact that it’s simply a remake of a fairly traditional retro RPG. Everything stopped when I got The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, though. Everything but the sword-swinging, that is. It’s a fantastic game so far, and I say that only after completing the game’s first temple. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me there. Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving/Black Friday!

Man oh man, this was the month to end all months for a gamer like me! I started off with a bang playing Dark Souls nigh obsessively. Possibly one of the hardest – and most rewarding – RPGs I’ve ever played! Between soul-crushing Dark Souls playthroughs, though, I thought revisiting The World Ends With You would be a good plan, as well as replaying Persona 4 since an anime based on the game is currently being released in Japan. As far as new games are concerned, though, I played Fate/Extra for PSP (which took me a whole day of going to five GameStops to find) and currently, my life is being consumed by the amazing-and-social-life-ending-life-simulator Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Honestly, I think the majority of my playing in December will ALSO be Skyrim…

Novembeard flew by for me without a lot of gaming. I ended up being coerced into a cruise to the Bahamas and worked on projects the entire time. Sounds fun, right? No. It was the worst time to find out I get seasick. Oh well. The food, at the very least, was good. But my true vacation started when I popped in my copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim! It took every ounce of strength in my body to keep myself from weeping tears of shameful joy. It may have been the only game I really got to play this month, but every second played was like walking on a dream. Now I’m just waiting to loot the bodies of my grades because the Dragonborn is going to destroy them.

What did I play in November? I can’t remember. I haven’t bought much since I got back from the States, and since I’m poor I’m raiding the deal bins of games I missed while, y’know, travelling the world. I just had Deus Ex: Human Revolution delivered for £10 (like, $15 dollars), while my family have my Christmas wish list so I can’t buy anything from that (Skyward Sword, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Uncharted 3).

I lie. I played No More Heroes 2, after forgetting i had bought it before i went travelling. not as good as the original. but still very funny.
