Warpback: What We Played in July 2014

warpback-0714-header

July was a fairly quiet month for us at Warp Zoned. Most of us were digging into backlogs, while others were just getting through some of the recent games that came out. For the most part, it seems like we’re all ready for the influx of new games we know is coming! Read on to see what we played in July.

My July was dominated by one game and one game alone… Shovel Knight (review here). After finishing the game, I immediately started up “New Game Plus” (which, back in my day, was known as the “Second Quest”). The enemies are tougher, the checkpoints are fewer, and the deaths are much more plentiful. In fact, try as I might, I cannot get past Propeller Knight. His stage gave me a lot of trouble the first time around, and it just feels a tad impossible in “New Game Plus.” But I keep trying, and that is the mark of a great game.

Congratulations on creating a terrific game, Yacht Club Games, but you owe me a new controller. Several, actually.

I had a lot of fun with gaming this month! I played lots of Contact on the DS, until I got Pokemon Platinum, which has been the only handheld game I’ve played since. Anthony Amato and I finally got all of the red skulls in TowerFall Ascension‘s cooperative mode, which was really hard! And we played lots of that competitively with friends, as well as all those crazy Sportsfriends games we love. Also a big milestone was getting the Platinum in Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch! Afterwards, I popped in Diablo III to try to get the last Trophy before the Platinum in that as well. Cooperatively, we’ve also been playing Guacamelee! and Terraria, which Anthony is much better at than I am!

Considering how busy the month of July was, I managed to put away a fair amount of game time. First I completed BioShock and its inevitable sequel BioShock 2, which means I can now justify buying BioShock Infinite. I also borrowed Lego City Undercover for the Wii U, which is as fun as other Lego games, but by Zeus’ grey beard are those loading screens long. I was jumping between that and Scram Kitty and His Buddy On Rails, which I have to take in small doses as it has a high challenge (SEE: frustratingly hard) factor.

Oh, and I played more Mario Kart 8. I really need to play online more to get my ranking up!

Now that I think about it, I really didn’t get a whole lot of gaming in this month. In addition to the usual tomfoolery of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I played a little bit of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I also played some Injustice: Gods Among Us thanks to an awesome sale on the PSN Store. But most importantly, I FINALLY got a Wii U! I started up The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and played a bit of Boost Mode in New Super Mario Bros. U.
