The Games of September 2014

gamesofseptember2014-header

It is your Destiny to read about the biggest new games that will be available in September. Yes, many of us are planning to devote some time to Bungie’s revolutionary shooter, but there are a ton of other games on tap for release this month. After all, it is the start of the annual “Fall Gaming Rush.” So here… we… go…

Two games have me excited for this month, and they both involve indiscriminately mowing down waves of bad guys… just like in the games mama used to make. First up is WB Games’ reboot of Gauntlet. The top-down dungeon explorer used to eat my quarters back in the day (kids, ask your parents what an “arcade” is) and the new reason is looking to provide just as many thrills. The second is Hyrule Warriors, Link’s first foray into Dynasty Warriors territory. I’ve never been a big Dynasty Warriors guy, but the way the trailers show Link and friends (and Ganondorf) plowing through enemies, it looks a lot like the Legend of Zelda of old. Maybe I’m off base, but I am definitely intrigued.

There are two games I’m super hype about this month: Jamestown Plus on PS4, and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call on 3DS. Jamestown Plus (which will technically be available in the “Summer”) is looking absolutely amazing on the PS4, and I can’t wait to get some play time in. And, well, you know how I feel about Theatrhythm. I want more! Other than that, I might pick up Destiny, though after both the Alpha and the Beta, I just wasn’t terribly impressed. And my backlog is big enough that I might not feel like spending the extra money on it… though I have been watching Watch Dogs drop in price, and I might just pick that up instead.

I’m very curious to see what The Witness (which is also a “Summer” release) is all about, and should I pick up a PS4 it is definitely on my To Buy list. The other game for that console which has me excited is KillAllZombies. The social media/spectator aspect of the zombie shooter seems perfect in the age of Twitch TV.

Of course, despite the many releases this month, September belongs to Destiny. I’m not a big online FPS player, and my few adventures into these games have been met with screaming, sometimes abusive, players. But the sheer scope of Destiny, along with the mythos and history Bungie has spent years creating, has the sci-fi geek in me very curious. I enjoyed the Mass Effect 3 online mode, which you were forced to play to reach the best ending, but with Destiny’s promise of weaving in-and-out between solo mode and multiplayer missions, I might become a believer.

There’s quite a few games I’m looking forward to playing in September. After playing the demo, I am really excited about NHL 15. I never was into sports games, but this one really brought me back to the NHL ’94 days. Looks like a ton of fun. I’m also looking forward to Hyrule Warriors. I’ve never played a game in the Dynasty Warriors series, and obliterating scores of baddies sounds like a blast. Finally, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I may pick up Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes. I’m a huge Marvel fan, and those figures look great. Plus, you know, Aladdin.
