The Games of December 2014

gamesof1214-header

The year rolls to a close this month with a handful of new games and the promise of an absolutely massive 2015. December’s release calendar may not typically be packed with the kinds of games that get gamers chattering, but there a few standouts will be available on store shelves (and digital store shelves) over the next 31 days. Games like Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which more than a few members of the Warp Zoned staff have their eyes on. What else are we looking forward to? Read on to find out…

I was a big fan of Square Enix’s Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, so I’m thrilled that the publisher has reteamed with Crystal Dynamics to produce Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. I realize that “isometric puzzle platformers” aren’t exactly setting the world on fire right now, so a sequel that looks bigger and much more challenging is a welcome gift this December. As a sucker for the “Captain Toad” sections of Super Mario 3D World, I’m also looking forward to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. A whole game might be too much of a good thing, but it’ll certainly be interesting. Finally, Secret Ponchos is available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers on the PS4 today and I can’t wait to get down to dueling.

There’s only one game I’m looking forward to this month, and that’s Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. Anthony Amato and I have really been enjoying Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and we’re excited about this new one. The only other game I’m excited about is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, but without a Wii U, I will probably never play it! Booooo.

All the big titles for Christmas seem to have dropped in November, leaving only a handful of December releases. I was really looking forward to The Crew, but since the unmitigated disaster that was Assassin’s Creed: Unity, my excitement in Ubisoft’s racer has been very tempered. On the other hand, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker looks like a bright and fresh isometric puzzler that could be the sleeper hit of Christmas. Count me in.

I’m really struggling to find anything interesting to play here, but if anything I may give Guilty Gear Xrd Sign a shot. I love the animations and soundtracks from the Guilty Gear games, and this one looks to be more of the same. And that’s a good thing. Other than that, I have some minor interest in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker but I think that one can wait until I’ve cleared out my backlog a bit.
