The Games of June 2015

gamesofjune-header

With a few small exceptions, we’ll all mostly be digging into our backlogs this month. Why? Well, it’s not necessarily because nothing new is coming out, but it is because there’s not much new coming out that we feel like paying full price for. We’re not united on this front, though, so you should read on to see what we will and won’t be playing this month here at Warp Zoned!

Hold on to your butts… my sole pick for the month of June is Lego Jurassic World. I’ve always enjoyed the Lego games and the trailers for Lego Jurassic World are super charming. You really can’t go wrong with short-armed T. Rex jokes.

OK, OK, Batman: Arkham Knight looks interesting as well but I still haven’t finished Arkham City yet. Maybe someday.

I’m sad to say it, but once again, I’m not excited for any video games this month. Well, that’s not entirely true… I’m super excited to be attending the “PlayStation E3 Experience” again this year. I’ll be heading to a local movie theater to catch Sony’s E3 Press Conference, which I’m really excited about. Other than that, I’ll just be hacking away at my backlog!

I am a little bit excited for Lego Jurassic World, but I have two unfinished Lego games, and they don’t deviate from the now-tired formula… collect studs, construct bricks, repeat.

And despite my love of all things Batman (with the exception of Gotham), Batman: Arkham Knight isn’t really doing it for me. I have yet to try the demos, but from various previews I have read, any shred of the original Batman: Arkham Asylum has been decimated in favour of explosions and the Batmobile, which is a shame. I loved the claustrophobic intimacy of that game, but we shall see. However, I’m tempted to just wait until the inevitable Game of the Year Edition because of the ridiculous fiasco involving the game’s downloadable content. Personally, I think it has been deliberately left out in a crass attempt to squeeze gamers for more money. I wonder if Warner Bros. would have attempted such a maneuver with a lesser-known character, or if it was not supposedly the last game in the series.

I agree with Andrew on Batman: Arkham Knight. While it’s sure to be a good game, Arkham Knight doesn’t seem like it’ll focus more on action than the previous installments. Again, I’ll probably wait until the Game of the Year Edition before I spend my hard-earned Batdollars on it. Lego Jurassic Park also looks like a fun game, but it’s likely another one that I’ll hold off on for a while. If history is any guide, I’ll be able to pick it up for a third of the price in no time. So looks like it’s an all-backlog month for me.

This June I am looking forward to Act of Aggression, an RTS inspired by the “Golden Era” of the genre. So far, it looks like it will be a faithful homage.

I grew up in that Golden Era, spending many hours with Command & Conquer, Warcraft, and StarCraft. It has been quite a while since I have seen a quality reproduction of this game style, but it looks like the developer, Eugen Systems, is doing just that. There are three disparate factions with unique units and balancing. There is base construction with resource/supply lines to control. Individual units can be upgraded depending on base construction and research the player conducts. The core mechanics of classic RTS games are there. Act of Aggression does have some small differences, like maps inspired by real world locations and factions and units inspired by modern or near-future technology. I do have a little voice in the back of my head that is worried that my expectations for a magical reboot for this genre are a fevered pipe dream, but there’s no telling until it comes out.
