Warpback: What We Played in September 2016

We here at Warp Zoned had a busy month of gaming this past September. For the most part, we dug into our backlogs, but with our Senior Editor at PAX West, there were a lot of newer games on the list as well! Hit the jump to see just what we were up to for the last few weeks.

I gotta admit, I’m still reeling from this Summer’s mighty disappointing Mighty No. 9, so last month I felt the strong urge to fire up Mega Man Anniversary Collection and replay a few classic entries in the series. I love all six games from Mega Man’s NES era, so I should have been an easy mark for Mighty No. 9’s creators, but I guess there are no guarantees in life.

This axiom also applies to Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, which sucked up all my controller time after its release on September 12. Don’t get me wrong, the sequel is pretty good, but it doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by Pac-Man Championship Edition DX.

I was all about gaming in September! While I was at PAX West, I tried to play as much as I could, including Pit People, Just Shapes and Beats, and MetaArcade’s Tunnels & Trolls: Naked Doom. I also played a ton of Crashlands at the show and after!

The game I played the most this month was Pokemon Go… I was late to the party but I’ve caught up considerably. I’m level 25 and I have 107 Pokemon in my Pokedex! And I’m excited to say I’ve walked more than I have in years. It’s been really great for my mental and physical health! To go with the theme, I’ve also been playing a lot of Pokemon Picross, which also led to me trying the demo for Picross 3D Round 2.

Other than that, I went back to Hyper Light Drifter, beat it, and unlocked more secrets than I thought could possibly be packed into such a small game. I also went back to an old favorite, Fallout 4, and tried to love Persona Q, which I’m still having a hard time getting into.

I decided to take a couple of weeks holiday from No Man’s Sky when I finally picked up Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in a bank holiday sale. You know a game is gorgeous when your non-gaming girlfriend walks into the room and exclaims about the visuals. But for me, it was more than lush visuals. I never owned a PlayStation or its sequel console. The only reason I bought a PlayStation 3 was because of the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog has proven, time and again, to be the masters of video game storytelling. These characters have depth and dimensions; we love them and we hate them, too, and we want them to succeed. Also, pirates! This was a beautiful ending to a game series that I believe will stand the test of time.

Then I went back to No Man’s Sky. I know the game is getting a lot of bad press, but I still find journeying from planet to planet, exploring the landscape and cataloging the creatures, to be a serene experience. Sure, it’s a walking sim, but it’s a beautiful one out there, in the universe. Actually, I lie. Before I went back to NMS, I started Dark Souls III. I love the Souls series, and I managed to get quite a few deaths into it before returning to NMS. I think I want to at least reach the Atlas before I give it up for good.

I’ve been eyeing my backlog with a strong urge to work my way through it. I started Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, because Off-TV Play is a beautiful thing in a relationship. It’s as fun as any Mario game I have played, but the Cat Mario suit is brilliant (I have cats). I’m also slogging through Lego Marvel Super Heroes, but I’m one of these people who finds the Lego games really repetitive, so at this point, I’m playing for the sake of finishing it and trading it in.

Most of my September gaming time was spent with Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. It felt so exhilarating to finally dive into my backlog and tackle some of my older titles. I think you can pick up this game for less than twenty bucks, and it’s definitely worth every penny.

I also got back into Animal Crossing: New Leaf ahead of the Fall update… and just in time, too. I’m now partaking in all the Halloween festivities that my town has to offer. Other than that, I spent some time with Pac-Man 256. This mobile title found its way to the PlayStation 4, and it’s great playing the game on the big screen.
