Weekly Warp-Up: Good News (Star Wars: Battlefront II Announced) and Bad News (Nintendo Discontinued the NES Classic)

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

This was a bad week for video game fans everywhere as Nintendo announced they’re discontinuing the NES Classic Edition. The microconsole was originally released in November, and its been hard to find ever since, so this is a particularly big blow to retro gaming fans. Hopefully, the upcoming launch of the Virtual Console on Nintendo’s Switch will help us forget this strange decision.

But there was also good news this week as EA unveiled the first trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront II, which showcased the game’s single-player campaign and confirmed a November 17 release date.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, the latest edition of Kickstart This! focuses on the retro-styled Cowgirls Vs Cthonimon, and the newest Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time essay delves into the weird world of the ridiculously popular The Sims.

Weekly Warp-Up: The Nintendo Switch is Retro-Tastic…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

The Nintendo Switch celebrated its one-month anniversary this week, and the console/handheld hybrid has emerged as a prime destination for retro-themed titles. Look no further than our reviews of Graceful Explosion Machine and Blaster Master Zero to see how the Switch is becoming an essential piece of technology for fans of retro gaming.

And it looks like this momentum will continue throughout the Spring, especially after this week’s announcement of the Jam-like NBA Playgrounds. This arcade-y basketball game will also be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in May.

Finally this week, the Warp Zoned Staff got together to discuss What We Played in March 2017 and The Games of April 2017. As you might have guessed, there was a lot of talk about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the former, and Persona 5 in the latter.

Weekly Warp-Up: Did You Get Fooled on April Fool’s Day 2017?

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

It was April Fool’s Day yesterday, and as usual, game publishers delivered a few goofy gags for their fans. And a few of them even turned out to be real.

The creators of Breaking Bad are NOT working on a Grand Theft Auto series for AMC, and NetherRealm is NOT adding the Wonder Twins to Injustice 2. However, you actually can dash down streets as Ms. Pac-Man with the “Insert Coin” filter on Google Maps. And Sega really did release 8-Bit Bayonetta as a free download through Steam.

But I think this year’s most interesting prank might be the BlizzCon Textual Adventure (a parody of the Choose Your Own Adventure books) that Blizzard added to the convention’s official website.

If you’re looking for more actual news, the biggest headline from the previous seven days has to be that Destiny 2 is officially coming to the PC, PS4, Xbox One on September 8.

And speaking of shooters, we looked at how Disorganization Leads to Criticism At Halo World Championship 2017 Finals, and offered up our impressions of the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire.

Finally this week, our latest Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time essay looks at the urban legends spawned by Pac-Man.

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Warp Zoned debuted a new feature this week, Weekend Pipeline, and it’ll provide a quick overview of the weekend’s upcoming in-game events, retail bargains, game conventions, and esports events every Friday.

But some publishers don’t want to just look ahead to the weekend, they want to start talking about the E3 Expo in June. And earlier this week, EA revealed that their EA Play event will include appearances from Star Wars: Battlefront 2, a new Need For Speed, FIFA 18, Madden NFL 18, alongside several other surprises.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, UK Correspondent Andrew Rainnie reloaded Kickstart This! for another round and focused on the open-world adventure Pine.

Finally, a little retro gaming is on the menu as we explore the PlayStation/Nintendo 64/Dreamcast roots of Spider-Man in “It Came From 200X,” as well as how piracy makes the world go round in a “Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time” essay about The Secret of Monkey Island.

It’s a good time to be a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, as Sega delivered updates on both of the Blue Blur’s upcoming games this week. Weekly Warp-Up: Nintendo Finally Launched the Switch…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

After a few months of teasing, Nintendo has officially unleashed the Switch on the world. The console/handheld hybrid seems to have had a successful launch, and the company is prepping fans for a second wave of titles with a new Nintendo Direct that confirmed more than 60 “Nindies” are in development for the machine, including SteamWorld Dig 2, Runner 3, Yooka-Laylee, and more. Capcom also announced that Ultra Street Fighter II will be released for the Switch on May 26.

Microsoft will attempt to compete with Nintendo’s latest console (and Sony, of course) with the launch of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service this Spring. This kind of “all-you-can-eat” download service has never been tried on a console before, and it should be very interesting to see how gamers react to it.

With all this talk about new games and new consoles, let’s not forget the Video Game History Foundation was founded to create a digital record of the industry’s past.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, we reviewed Double Dragon IV, and the staff got together to discuss What We Played in February and The Games of March.

Andrew Rainnie, UK Correspondent extraordinaire, sat down with the owner of Super Bario, the owner of Glasgow’s first arcade bar, for a conversation about Joysticks, Pints, and Kickstarter. And finally, the Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time rolls on with #3, Super Mario 64, and a look at the launch of the Nintendo 64.

Everything comes full circle, and the rest of the of the news from this past week can be found after the break. (more…)
