Killer Instinct will be Free-To-Play and available on launch day

Killer Instinct will look very different from what fans remember when it’s released for the Xbox One later this year.

The fighter isn’t being developed at Rare. Instead, the game’s next-generation debut will be handled by Double Helix Games (probably best known for Silent Hill Homecoming). It will also be… brace yourself… free-to-play.

The “base game” will consist of a single character, Jago, and all other characters (including Sabrewulf and Glacius, along with other returning and new characters) will be available to download for a to-be-determined charge. It’s definitely an odd offer, and it’s unknown if there will be a “full game” charge or if each character will have to purchased piecemeal.

Killer Instinct will be available to download for the Xbox One on the system’s launch date in November.

MS @ E3 13: Killer Instinct confirmed for Xbox One

This is both a surprise and not a surprise, but Microsoft has announced that a new Killer Instinct is in development for the Xbox One.

I’d say this certainly qualifies as the resurrection of an “historic” property from Rare. Killer Instinct will be available for the Xbox One this year.

“Historic IP” from Rare will get a new Xbox One game at E3 2013

rare-logoMicrosoft’s Don Mattrick opened the “Next Xbox Reveal” by saying that Tuesday’s presentation was all about introducing the world to the Xbox One. Game announcements for the next generation console, including 15 titles in development at Microsoft Studios, would come at E3.

One of those games will apparently be the rebirth of a classic franchise from Rare’s stable. Speaking to Polygon, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said: “Fans of Rare and Rare IP I think will be pleased with what we’re going to show at E3. That historic IP that they’ve built I think can play a real important role on Xbox One.”

The GoldenEye and Donkey Kong Country developer was purchased by Microsoft in 2002, which also included most of their non-Nintendo published properties such as Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Battletoads, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and Jet Force Gemini.

So which one will it be? It’s anyone’s guess, but Microsoft did famously renew the Killer Instinct trademark earlier this year.
