EA’s acceptance of SimCity situation includes free download of one of these games

simcity-header

The end is near for the SimCity launch debacle as Electronic Arts has finally worked their way through the five stages of grief:

  • First came denial… “There’s nothing wrong with our game, it’s just too popular!”
  • Then the anger… “No, you can’t have a refund.”
  • This was followed by the bargaining… “What if we add more servers?”
  • Then wallowing in depression… “It’s supposed to be an MMO!”
  • Finally, acceptance and the promise of a free game for all of our troubles.

If you’ve purchased SimCity or plan to activate it by March 25 (that’s right, this offer is good even if you haven’t bought the game yet), you’ll also be given the opportunity to select one of eight games as a free download from EA’s Origin service. Your selection must by made by March 30 and the selection page will open by March 22. The eight games are:

  • Battlefield 3
  • Bejeweled 3
  • Dead Space 3
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted
  • Plants vs. Zombies
  • SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition

If you’re on the fence about SimCity, perhaps a free game to go with it could sweeten the deal. But I guess that means EA has slipped back to the bargaining stage.

Madden NFL 13, Borderlands 2 lead all September bestsellers

Boom! The annual juggernaut that is the Madden NFL Football has once again taken the top spot for September sales as Madden NFL 13 reigned supreme last month.

Gearbox’s Borderlands 2 followed close behind with strong sales of its own. In fact, they were so strong that the sequel managed to top the first month sales of the original Borderlands by 234%. That is just an insane number.

New releases controlled much of the top ten with FIFA Soccer 13 (#3), Guild Wars 2 (#5), NHL 13 (#6), and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria (#7) also performing well.

The full top ten for September 2012 can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: NHL 13, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Battlefield 3 Premium, More

A pair of fighting games lead this week’s new release slate. There’s EA’s NHL 13 (available for the PS3 and Xbox 360) and then there’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (also available for the PS3 and Xbox 360). See, it’s funny because there’s a lot of fighting in hockey and… eh, moving on…

EA hasn’t annualized the Battlefield series (yet), but for those of you who missed last year’s Battlefield 3, it’s now available in a “Premium Edition” for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Speaking of re-releases, Nintendo will make Kirby’s Dream Collection available on Sunday the 16th. And in honor of Finding Nemo‘s 3D re-release, Disney is bringing Finding Nemo: Escape to the Big Blue to the 3DS and DS. Seems appropriate.

Finally, also available this week is the Kinect-powered basketball dribbling sim NBA Baller Beats and the PC adventure game Eternal Journey: New Atlantis.

Modern Warfare 3, BioShock, House of the Dead Overkill, more added to PS Store

After a few ridiculously game-heavy weeks, Sony is dialing it back a bit with this yesterday’s PlayStation Store update. The PS3 Full Games section is the highlight of the week including the underwater adventure of BioShock, the modern warfare of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and the grindhouse horror of The House of The Dead: Overkill – Extended Cut.

Also available this week is the PSN/Vita game Zen Pinball 2. The base game is available to download for free, and 12 additional tables can be purchased including several featuring The Avengers.

Finally this week, Battlefield 3 Premium subscribers will be able to download the Armored Kill expansion for free, a week before it’s available to the general public (for $14.99).

Hit the jump for more on this week’s new releases, or head over to the PlayStation Blog for a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons and special PlayStation Plus deals. (more…)

Battlefield 3 Premium Edition set for release in September

Well, my day just improved significantly: EA announced the Battlefield 3 Premium Edition. It comes with more than just the original game and all five expansion packs – it also includes the Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Head-Start Kit. This kit is designed just for people like me who are planning on coming to the party late: so we don’t get annihilated every time we hop into a multiplayer game, we get access to 15 different weapons, gadgets, and vehicle upgrades. For $69.99, you’ll get the works: more than 25 maps, 70 weapons and vehicles, and plenty of unlocks and upgrades.

Battlefield 3 Premium Edition will be out on September 11 on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Check out the website for more details.

Lego Batman 2 rises to the top of the June 2012 bestsellers list

With editions on seven different platforms, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes rose to the top of The NPD Group’s monthly list of bestselling games. The remainder of the list was split between new releases, May holdovers, and Fall 2011 games that are still popular.

There were only a handful of new games available in June with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (#2), Pokemon Conquest (#7), and The Amazing Spider-Man (#10) all earning spots in the top ten. Grasshopper’s Lollipop Chainsaw didn’t make the cut, continuing Suda 51′s lack of success at the register.

An astounding four games from Fall 2011 continue to sell strongly enough to make the top ten: NBA 2K12 (#5), Batman: Arkham City (#6, boosted by the newly released Game of the Year Edition), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (#8), and Battlefield 3 (#9). I’m sure it helps that all were among the best-reviewed games of last year.

As a whole, game and hardware sales are down 29% from June 2011, according to Joystiq.

A complete list of last month’s best-selling games can be found after the break. (more…)

Daily Scoop: June 15, 2012 – The many masks

Well, I woke up this morning thinking it was Saturday, and I was bummed out to discover it was only Friday! But at least the weekend is a few hours closer. I hope to catch up on some sleep and chores! Well, I mean, I’d rather be gaming and writing, but sometimes you need to take out the trash, if you know what I’m saying.

Amazon’s got some solid downloadable PC deals right now – you can get Risen for $5.99, Dead Island for $11.99, or The Darkness II for $12.49. Best Buy is having some sales on games as well – you can get Dirt 3 for 50% off (if you’re a Reward Zone member, that is). They’ve also got an extensive sale list, including games like FIFA Soccer 12 ($39.99), Battlefield 3 ($39.99), and Mortal Kombat ($29.99). Scoop ‘em up!

Diablo III named best-selling game of May 2012 after collecting a ton of loot

Can you guess the best-selling game of May 2012 according to The NPD Group’s monthly calculations? Go on, guess, it’s not really a mystery… The best-selling game of May 2012 was Blizzard’s Diablo III.

Diablo III’s loot frenzy was the lone bright spot for the game industry this month as total sales were down 28% from May 2011 with console hardware taking the biggest hit (a 39% drop).

But that’s not for lack of trying. A ton of new releases broke into the top ten this month including Max Payne 3 (#2), Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (#3), Sniper Elite V2 (#7), and Dragon’s Dogma (#9). But I guess they didn’t put up the sales numbers to compete with last May’s biggest game, L.A. Noire.

The complete top ten can be found after the break. (more…)
