Nintendo only rarely adds new titles to their budget-priced Nintendo Selects line, so it’s always big news when they do. Today, the consolemaker confirmed that eight games on the Wii U and 3DS will receive price drops in the near future, including fan favorites like Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Wii U Games

  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • NES Remix Pack
  • Pikmin 3
  • Super Mario 3D World

3DS Games

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Mario Party: Island Tour
  • Yoshi’s New Island

Nintendo also announced plans to reissue Super Mario All-Stars (a compilation includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World) for the Wii, as well as dropping the price on an additional trio of Wii classics:

Wii Games

  • Animal Crossing: City Folk
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • Super Mario All-Stars
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2

All of these new additions to the Nintendo Selects line will be available from retail locations beginning March 11 for $19.99.

Warp Zoned’s 2014 Golden Pixel Awards: Honoring Our Favorite Games

wzgoldenpixelawards-header

With the PS4 and Xbox One entering their first full year on store shelves, 2014 turned out to be a bit of a transition year. A lot of games were delayed into 2015 and a few others were delayed even further. With the other two consolemakers taking a step back in 2014, it was Nintendo’s time to shine and the wizards behind the Wii U responded with nearly a dozen major titles. But that doesn’t mean the PS4 and the Xbox One (or the PS3 and Xbox 360, for that matter) went hungry in 2014.

There were plenty of great games to go around last year and you can read all about them as we hand out our annual Golden Pixel Awards… (more…)

Nintendo Download: Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Weapon Shop De Omasse, more

donkeykongcountrytropicalfreeze-header

Even though Sochi is in the middle of a heatwave, this week’s Nintendo Download is packed with ice and snow.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Wii U leads this week’s new releases. The most famous gorilla in gaming has escaped the jungle and will be climbing snow-capped mountains in his latest adventure. And the entire Kong family (including Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky) is along for the ride.

Also available for the Wii U this week is a true NES classic, Ice Hockey. The American women may have missed out on the Gold Medal game in this year’s Winter Olympics, but it’s always a good time for Ice Hockey.

Over on the 3DS eShop, four new games are now available to download this week. Level-5’s Weapon Shop De Omasse, the last game in the “Guild01” collection to make it to America, leads the way. If taking on the responsibilities of a rhythmic weaponsmith doesn’t appeal to you, this week’s new releases also include Kung Fu Rabbit (a side-scrolling platformer), Quell Reflect (a puzzle game), and Sky Kid (another NES classic).

More details on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Donkey Kong Country: Tropcial Freeze, EDF 2025, NASCAR 14, More

earthdefenseforce2025-header

While Mario and Sonic have already conquered the Winter Olympics, Nintendo is ready to send another one of its beloved characters out into the snow. The normally jungle-bound Donkey Kong will get to play in the powder this week with the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropcial Freeze for the Wii U. Better pack your mittens, big guy.

A jungle of a different kind will need to be saved in D3 Publisher’s Earth Defense Force 2025. The big bugs are back and the Earth Defense Force must once again band together to save the urban jungle that is Tokyo. You can get it on the PS3 or the Xbox 360.

This week’s final new release is NASCAR 14 for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. The franchise has switched publishers from Activision to Deep Silver, but developer Eutechnyx is once again responsible for development on the racing simulation.

Finally, a pair of ports have found new homes this week. Ubisoft’s highly acclaimed Rayman Legends makes a next-generation leap to the PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, WB’s Lego Marvel Super Heroes downgrades to the DS. Games for everybody!

Retro and Monolith Soft hiring… What does Nintendo have planned?

nintendologo

Two of Nintendo’s shining subsidiaries, Retro Studios and Monolith Soft, have both been busy advertising to fill several positions this week.

First up, Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft (translated by Siliconera) is urgently seeking a Game Planner, Town Planner, and Battle Algorithm Planner. The advert also called for people with experience in A.I. programming, as well as seeking battle animation designers. These roles are presumably for the Wii U title X, which seems to be related to the Xenoblade world. However, that game has a tentative release date sometime this year, so if the posts are for that project, it may mean that Monolith Soft is gearing up for crunch time or, more worryingly, that the RPG will be delayed. However, if you like your glass half full, it could mean that Monolith has something other than X in the works.

More recently, Zach Works, a recruiter for Nintendo, tweeted about a hiring spree at Retro’s Austin based offices.

While the company is still tweaking Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, that game is due out on February 21, so any hiring now would have to be for a completely new project. Could it be that Retro is returning to the Metroid series? Or will the company be moving on to another franchise in Nintendo’s massive library?

Two words: Star Fox.

We can but dream.

New Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze trailer heralds the return of Dixie

Although it now won’t be released this side of Christmas, Retro’s Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is shaping up to look like one of the Wii U’s must-own titles, if the new trailer is anything to go by. Not only does it show off a barrel-load of new enemies, but it also highlights the return of fan favourite Dixie Kong and her whip-like blonde ponytail. Interestingly, she only appears alongside Donkey Kong himself, although Retro has previously confirmed the characters can be played individually in multiplayer or swapped during levels in the single-player mode via character barrels.

With one playable character still to be revealed, many are wondering if it is someone we have seen before such as Funky or Trixie. Or… maybe Retro has an entirely new character for us.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze slips (on a banana peel) to February 2014

donkeykongcountrytropicalfreeze-header

Nintendo has announced (via their latest Nintendo Direct presentation) that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has been delayed. The side-scrolling plaformer, which is in development at Retro Studios, will now be released in February 2014. It was originally set to launch this November.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stated that the reason for the delay is to give Retro a little more time to deliver the best game possible.
