Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us wins ten statues at 2014 DICE Awards

dicesummit-header

When Santa Claus asks if you’ve been naughty or nice, if you’re a game developer, you might want to answer “naughty.” During last night’s DICE Awards in Las Vegas, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us took home the top prize in ten categories (out of 13 possible nominations). The only other game to win multiple awards was BioShock Infinite, which took home two (Action Game of the Year and Oustanding Achievement in Original Music Composition).

With such a big haul, The Last of Us naturally took home Game of the Year honors. The game also won Adventure Game of the Year, Oustanding Achievement in Game Direction, Oustanding Achievement in Story, Oustanding Achievement in Animation, Oustanding Achievement in Art Direction, Oustanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Oustanding Achievement in Sound Design, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, and Outstanding Character Performance (for Ashley Johnson’s portrayal of Ellie).

A few other games did manage to wrestle a few awards away from Naughty Dog, but that’s mostly because The Last of Us didn’t qualify for every category. For example, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons won Downloadable Game of the Year, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds won Handheld Game of the Year, and Plants vs Zombies 2 won Casual Game of the Year.

The complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)

CoD Ghosts and Xbox One are December 2013’s best-selling game and console

callofdutyghosts-header

The NPD Group has delivered their monthly report on the state of the retail game market and December 2013 was another blockbuster month. According to Joystiq, consumers spent $3.28 billion on video game products last month, an increase of two percent over December 2012. And thanks to new consoles, hardware sales were way up, totalling $1.37 billion (versus $1.07 billion last year).

And speaking of next-generation consoles, NPD is reporting that the Xbox One can lay claim to the US sales crown for December. Though Sony still holds a slight edge in total worldwide sales.

As for the games, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 pulled off a repeat atop the retail sales chart. They were followed by the usual assortment of holiday season bestsellers and you can find last month’s complete top ten after the break. (more…)

CoD: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 march to the top of November 2013’s best-selling games chart

callofdutyghosts-header

With the PS4 and Xbox One now available in stores across the country, the NPD Group is ready to talk about the financial health of the video game industry with their most recent monthly report. Total sales of $2.7 billion fueled the game industry in November, an increase of seven percent over November 2012’s sales numbers. The next-generation had a lot to do with the inflated number, as hardware sales were listed at $1.3 billion for the month, a 58% increase year-over-year.

But what about the games? Well, new releases Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag marched to the top three spots. Below that is a trio of non-November releases (Madden NFL 25, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K14) and below that is a trio of family-friendly titles (Skylanders Swap Force, Just Dance 2014, Disney Infinity). FIFA 14 rounded out the top ten.

The top ten brought with it an interesting comparison between the two next-generation consoles and there seemed to be no clear-cut winner. According to Joystiq, the PS4 versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed IV, Madden NFL 25, NBA 2K14, and FIFA 14 outsold their Xbox One counterparts. But the Xbox One can claim sales superiority with Skylanders Swap Force and Just Dance 2014 among multiplatform releases.

Finally, it was a bad month to be a platform-exclusive game as major releases like Super Mario 3D World, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Forza Motorsport 5, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds failed to crack the top ten.

You can find the complete chart of November 2013’s best-sellng games after the break. (more…)

GTA5 steals our hearts (and money) as the best-selling game of September 2013

grandtheftautov-box-largeRockstar Games was on a quest for booty last month as Grand Theft Auto V was declared the best-selling game of the month by The NPD Group (via Joystiq). Not only did GTA5 sell a ridiculous amount of copies, but the title actually raised the fortunes of the entire video game industry. In September 2012, the game industry recorded $848 million in retail sales. Last month? $1.07 billion. Whoa.

The rest of the top ten includes a mixture of new releases and August holdovers. NBA 2K14 (#3), Diablo III (#4), FIFA 14 (#5), Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix (#6), and NHL 14 (#8) represent the new releases while Madden NFL 25 (#2), Disney Infinity (#7), and Saints Row IV (#10) all remained on the list from August. The retail version of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (at #9) was the only game with a pre-August release date to crack the top ten.

If you’d prefer your monthly NPD report in list format, we’ve got that too:

Bestselling Games in September 2013
1. Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, PS3)
2. Madden NFL 25 (Xbox 360, PS3)
3. NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
4. Diablo III (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
5. FIFA 14 (Xbox 360, PS3, Vita)
6. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix (PS3)
7. Disney Infinity (Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)

EA Sports has kicked FIFA 14 onto all three Sony platforms (the PS3, Vita, and PSP) while Konami has focused on just the PS3 for Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. Also available for the PS3 this week is From Software’s latest mech warfare title, Armored Core: Victory Day; the Kung Fu Factory-developed all-girl fighting game, Game Fight; and two PS2 Classics: The Mark of Kri and Tokobot Plus: Mysteries of the Karakuri.

newreleases092413

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a new release for the Wii U!

Nintendo’s next-generation system is gathering steam as we head into the Fall gaming period and it continues this week with the release of Scribblenauts Unmasked. Supposedly, the game, which will also be available for the 3DS, brings together every DC Comics character ever in a massive superhero/supervillain crossover.

Gamers will also be able to go for the goal this week as the two biggest soccer game franchises go head-to-head. FIFA 14 (EA Sports has finally dropped the “Soccer” from the title) will be released for the PS3, Vita, and Xbox 360 this week. Meanwhile, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

If soccer isn’t your thing, Armored Core, the giant mech series from From Software, is back with a new installment. Armored Core: Verdict Day will be available this week for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Finally this week, the romantic RPG Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi comes to the 3DS from Aksys in both Standard and Limited editions.
