Celebrate Xbox Live’s 10th anniversary with a free copy of Wreckateer

Microsoft is celebrating their Xbox Live service’s 10th birthday today, and instead of asking for gifts, they’re the ones doing the giving…

Today and tomorrow, all Xbox Live members will be able to download a free copy of Wreckateer. It would have been nice to give away a game that every Xbox 360 owner can play, but a free game is a free game. The Kinect-exclusive is regularly priced at 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

If Wreckateer isn’t your kind of game, Microsoft has also cut the price of seven of the biggest Xbox Live Arcade titles. Bastion (600 Microsoft Points), Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (200 Microsoft Points), Castle Crashers (600 Microsoft Points), Fruit Ninja Kinect (400 Microsoft Points), Battlefield 1943 (600 Microsoft Points), Peggle (400 Microsoft Points), and Full House Poker (400 Microsoft Points) are all 50% off from today until November 22.

Xbox Live users can also download a special 10th anniversary Gamerpic this week. Doing so will enter you in a contest to obtain a special 10th anniversary Xbox 360 console. Yes, please.

Finally, Microsoft’s Major Nelson has given away 90 one-year Xbox Live Gold subscriptions so far today. He’s got 10 more he plans to give away in 15 minutes (at 7 PM Eastern), so head over to his blog and enter.

Skyrim practically sweeps the 2012 IAAs with five awards

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences handed out the Interactive Achievement Awards for the 15th consecutive year on February 9 and, not surprisingly, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came away the big winner.

The RPG practically swept all of the major awards including Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, and Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering. It also took home RPG of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Story.

Among the other winners, Portal 2 lead the way with three awards including Outstanding Achievement in Connectivity, Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, and an Outstanding Character Performance for Wheatley. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception also took home three awards, all for Naughty Dog’s continued mastery of game graphics.

You can find the full list of winners after the break, while all the nominated games are listed here. (more…)

Fear not, would-be denizen of the shadows: Fruit Ninja Kinect is here to fill the void! (more…)

Summer of Arcade 2011 begins July 20; Toy Soldiers 2, Bastion, Fruit Ninja, more included

Microsoft has announced they’re bringing back the Summer of Arcade for a fourth go around this Summer.

Beginning July 20th, the promotion will last for five weeks and feature five of the biggest Xbox Live Arcade games in development. The full lineup includes:

  • Toy Soldiers: Cold War, the sequel to the popular Toy Soldiers, but now with a “G.I. Joe” twist
  • Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, a side-scroller that reminds me a little of last year’s Limbo with a UFO
  • Fruit Ninja Kinect, the popular iPhone game comes to the Xbox 360 and your whole body becomes a slicing and dicing machine
  • Bastion, an action RPG that really impressed us at this year’s PAX East.
  • From Dust, a god game from the creator of Out of This World

Microsoft hasn’t nailed down the Summer of Arcade release schedule yet, so nobody knows what order the games will be released in just yet. Hit the jump for more details on all the games and be sure to check out the Summer of Arcade E3 trailer at Xbox.com. (more…)
