It came to a head during Metal Gear Solid 4, which reached amazing highs in gameplay, narrative, and fanboyish nostalgia, but was laced with overly long interstitials crammed with far too much exposition. Your eyes do not deceive you, this is reality… Sony has updated their virtual storefront, the PlayStation Store, with a ton of new games.

Leading the way is Sony’s next major PS4 release, InFamous: Second Son. Second Son will spin off with a new main character (Delsin) and a new locale (Seattle) because Cole McGrath lost his life at the end of InFamous 2. In a break from tradition, you’ll have to wait until Friday (March 21) to continue your infamous ways.

Also available for the PS4 this week is Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Hideo Kojima’s prologue to the next Metal Gear game, and Stealth Inc.: Ultimate Edition, a next-gen upgrade to the popular puzzle platformer. Ground Zeroes is also available to download from the PS3 section of the store. Finally, the mining platformer SteamWorld Dig makes the next-generation leap in a special PS4/Vita Cross-Buy edition.

But don’t think the PS3 is being left out in this week’s PlayStation Store update. The Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has finally been released (it’s available on the Vita too), along with Tecmo Koei’s insane zombie slasher, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, and Vlambeer’s dogfighting sim, Luftrausers (which was released as a PS3/Vita Cross-Buy title).

MGS5: Ground Zeroes gets a pre-release price cut and includes Phantom Pain DLC

metalgearVKonami dropped a lot of information on us this week about Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. For starters, if you purchase the game “early on” (no time period specified), you’ll get exclusive DLC for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In the retail version, it will be available “in the first batch;” digitally, it will be available for only a limited amount of time. The DLC unlocks additional staff for the Mother Base, introduced in Ground Zeroes, and will give players an advantage against The Phantom Pain.

There will also be unlockable content from Ground Zeroes that will carry over to The Phantom Pain. Ground Zeroes players will have a leg up with the additional staff, which will include rescued prisoners of war and VIPs. You will be able to carry over your character skins as well.

But wait, there’s more! Ground Zeroes will have a second screen iDroid app, which will be available for iOS, Android, and Xbox Smart Glass systems. This free app is a replica of Big Boss’ communicator and map, meaning you’ll be able to look at your maps, call in air support, or play the audio files (found in the form of cassette tapes) found in Camp Omega.

And finally, Konami has announced a price reduction. On the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, physical and digital copies of the game will only cost $29.99. On the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the physical game will be $29.99, while digital will be $19.99. The game will be available starting March 18, 2014, so if you want to get in on some of these special additions, you should pre-order it soon.

Compare all four versions of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in this new trailer

This video released by Konami takes us through Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, comparing its graphical capabilities on all four consoles: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. There are some subtle differences throughout, with the strangest one being in the 1/2 and 1/4 speeds that start around 2:07 – you might not notice it, but the only one that has a bird flying in the air in the background is the Xbox One version.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be out on all four platforms on March 18.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be available in Spring 2014

metalgearsolidgroundzeroes-firstartNo more tricks and no more subterfuge, Konami has officially announced a release date for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Better known as the prequel chapter to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes will be available for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in Spring 2014.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid saga, had this to say about the Ground Zeroes prequel: “The advanced capabilities of the Fox Engine have allowed me to tell the new story in a new way. There will be a significant difference in what Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain brings to the series, so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential. As such, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has been designed to introduce key elements, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game will offer.”

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will receive a retail release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 (priced at $29.99) as well as a digital release (priced at $19.99). The next-generation PS4/Xbox One version will also be priced at $29.99 and will only be available as a digital download.

As for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it currently has no official release date.
