Capcom is planning a “full-scale offensive” for the Resident Evil franchise this year

capcomlogo

Brace yourself, the Resident Evil franchise is going on a “full-scale offensive” during the back half of 2016 and into 2017. Capcom announced their battle plan during a recent Quarterly Financial Report, and it’s hard to argue with their choice of words… the publisher has already released two Resident Evil games in 2016 and will push out three more in the coming months, along with the final entry in the Milla Jovovich-starring film franchise:

Resident Evil 0 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One) January 20, 2016
Resident Evil 6 (PS4, Xbox One) March 29, 2016
Umbrella Corps (PC, PS4) June 21, 2016
Resident Evil 5 (PS4, Xbox One) Summer 2016
Resident Evil 4 (PS4, Xbox One) Fall 2016
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (Film) January 27, 2017

And then there’s Resident Evil 7, which Capcom began teasing more than six months ago. Obviously, there’s no guarantee that Resident Evil 7 will be released (or even announced) this year, but the E3 Expo is right around the corner and 2016 is the 20th anniversary of the first Resident Evil game.

On top of all this, Capcom confirmed a few months back that a full remake of Resident Evil 2 is also in the works. The oft-requested doesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s very possible that it’s launch will also fall within the “full-scale offensive” period.

I guess the bottom line is that it’s a great time to be a Resident Evil fan.

Xbox Store Today: Killer Instinct Season 3, RBI Baseball 16, Resident Evil 6, more

Ready? Fight!

Microsoft has launched the first batch of Killer Instinct Season 3 content on the Xbox One and PC today. That includes four new characters (Rash, Arbiter, Kim Wu, and Tusk) and an updated visual look. Four more characters are in the works (the vampiric Mira in April, Gargos in May, and a pair of brand new characters in June and July), as well as the mysterious “Shadow Lords” Story Mode.

Also available to download this week for the Xbox One is RBI Baseball 16, MLB Advanced Media’s latest retro-styled baseball sim. This year’s edition includes a number of new animations, along with a “revamped defensive AI” and an “improved batting system.” There’s no peanuts or Crackerjack, but Xbox One owners will also get the chance to try out Resident Evil 6, which was re-released in a remastered edition this week by Capcom.

Finally this week, Telltale Games will bring Minecraft: Story Mode to a temporary end with the game’s fifth episode, while The Walking Dead: Michonne reaches its midpoint with Episode 2. Both games are available to download through the Xbox Games Store for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

MLB The Show 16, RBI Baseball 16, Resident Evil 6, more added to PS Store

The smell of peanuts and Crackerjack are in the air… Opening Day 2016 is less than a week away. As we wait for that first “Play Ball!” of the season, Sony and MLB Advanced Media added a pair of baseball sims to the PlayStation Store this week.

Developed by Sony San Diego, MLB The Show 16 returns for another year on the PS4 and PS3, and promises to include “more gameplay improvements, new game modes, and a greater ability to personalize your baseball experience.” Meanwhile, MLB Advanced Media’s RBI Baseball 16 brings its retro-styled gameplay to the PS4, with the developer promising to include a “revamped defensive AI” and an “improved batting system.”

MLB The Show 16 and RBI Baseball 16 will be joined by more than a dozen other new games on the PlayStation Store this week including a Resident Evil 6 re-release on the PS4, Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution 2 Plus on the Vita, and the side-scrolling shooter No Time To Explain on the PS4.

Finally this week, Telltale is pulling double duty with the release of Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 5 and The Walking Dead: Michonne Episode 2 on the PS4 and PS3.

More information on all of these games (and the rest of this week’s new releases) can be found after the break. And a complete rundown of this week’s new game add-ons and discounts can be found over at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

New Releases: Oculus Rift, MLB The Show 16, Resident Evil 6, More

newreleases032716

While the Samsung Gear VR has been available for a few months now, the real virtual reality revolution begins this week with the launch of the Oculus Rift. Unfortunately, the headset itself is currently sold out at all retail outlets, but you can definitely peruse the 30 titles in the launch lineup while you wait for stocks to replenish.

Baeball fans still have to have to wait a week for Opening Day, but Sony wants us all to “Play Ball!” this week with the release of MLB The Show 16 on the PS4 and PS3. As usual, the sports sim will receive a number of new features this year including a revamped Franchise Mode. Players will also be able to go on a quest for popularity in Conquest Mode and compete in online tournaments with Battle Royale Mode.

Capcom continues their Resident Evil anniversary celebration this week with a PS4 and Xbox One re-release of Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil 6’s intersecting storyline will be augmented with all it’s previously-released DLC including Siege Mode, Predator Mode, Survivor Mode, Onslaught Mode, and The Mercenaries maps.

The Resident Evil storyline is certainly a roller coaster ride, so watch as I use that to segue into this week’s Early Access release of Atari’s RollerCoaster Tycoon World.

And finally this week, a pair of RPGs will be available for PlayStation players. Nights of Azure is an RPG for the PS4 from developer Gust and the one of the creators of Fatal Frame, Trillion: God of Destruction is an RPG for the Vita about destroying a god with 1,000,000,000,000 hit points.

Capcom will re-release Resident Evil 4, RE5, RE6 for the PS4, Xbox One this year

Capcom has always been happy to re-release the early entries in the Resident Evil franchise on any new platform that comes along, but they’re clearly taking it to a new level with their latest announcement. Over on the Capcom-Unity blog, the publisher has just confirmed that they plan to bring Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6 to the PS4 and Xbox One this year.

All three games will be priced at $19.99 apiece, and Resident Evil 6 will launch first, on March 29. It’ll be followed by Resident Evil 5 this Summer, and Resident Evil 4 in the Fall. And for fans to buy their games from a brick-and-mortar retailer, Capcom plans to stock store shelves with a physical game disc for each title.

It’s a good time to be a fan of the Resident Evil franchise as nearly the entire series has received, or is in line to receive, a re-release on the PS4 and Xbox One. Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 are currently available on the current-generation consoles, while a full Resident Evil 2 remake is set to launch next year.

NBA 2K13 slams it home as the bestselling game of October 2012

The NPD Group has released their report on the bestselling games of October 2012 and NBA 2K13 has come out on top. The basketball sim’s lack of competition from the now-canceled NBA Live 13 surely pushed it to greater heights and enabled it to hold off other October releases like Resident Evil 6 (#2), Pokemon Black 2 (#3), Dishonored (#4), and Pokemon White 2 (#5).

New releases performed very well in October as Medal of Honor: Warfighter (#8) and Skylanders Giants (#10) also cracked the top ten even though game sales dropped 25% from October 2011. Of course, things like that happen when you’re competing with the one-two punch of Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City.

The full top ten for October 2012 can be found after the break. (more…)
