Sony @ E3 11: Sony announces affordable 3D display and glasses for gamers

Tretton announced that Sony has created a 24 inch 3D monitor, bundled with a pair of 3D glasses, a 6 foot HDMI cable, and Resistance 3 for $499. This will bring the immersive 3D experience to gamers who can’t afford the steep price tag on 3D TVs and glasses.

But $499 is still a hell of a lot of money.

Resistance 3 pre-order bonus lets you play as Nathan Hale

Wait, what?

That’s right…you can run around in multiplayer as needs-his-medication Nathan Hale in the final hours of his life. That is, if you pre-order Resistance 3 from Best Buy. The multiplayer skin features Hale looking awfully haggard, struggling through his final hours of being a human…and, it turns out, being alive. This whole paragraph is making me weepy.

The PlayStation Blog has a full list of pre-order bonuses (shout out to the awesome David Bull!). Amazon is giving you a No. 60 Air Fuel Grenade, while Wal-Mart’s offer is five custom name titles – including the elite Sentinels. I’m going to have a terribly hard time choosing between playing as Hale in multiplayer… or pre-ordering from GameStop, which is offering a replica of the necklace Joseph Capelli wore. Yeah, I’m referring to the necklace of Chimera teeth.

I guess I’ll have to make my decision before September 6th, when Insomniac Games finally lets this beast out into the wild.

Sony’s E3 2011 showcase to include at least four surprises

Sony has launched their official E3 2011 website with the tagline “It Just Keeps Getting Better.” While most people expect Sony to be in damage control mode at this year’s expo, the console-maker does have a pretty stellar lineup of stuff planned for the big show:

  • The Next Generation Portable (NGP)
  • Infamous 2 (PS3)
  • Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (PS3)
  • Resistance 3
  • Twisted Metal (PS3)
  • Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (PS3)

Sony also plans to surprise gamers with at least four additional announcements. We can only speculate what they might be but the publisher has plenty of other games in the pipeline including the recently announced Starhawk, The Last Guardian, the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection and Sly 4.

It could be all of them. It could be none of them. We’ll find out for sure on Monday, June 6.

Minimalist Resistance 3 box art is awesome

Were you worried that the box art for Resistance 3 would feature another generic soldier standing in front of another generic blasted out wasteland? Well, so was Sony. Instead, they’ve given us the awesomely minimalist design you see to your left (click it for an enlarged version). And check out the New York City skyline that doubles as the teeth on that Chimera!

Yup, this is completely awesome. Good job Sony. And a big pat on the back to British artist Olly Moss, who designed the box art (the PlayStation.Blog has more images using the design).

Resistance 3 will be released exclusively for the PS3 on September 6.

Buy Battle: LA Blu-ray, get Resistance 3 demo

G4 has the news that a 30-minute Resistance 3 demo will be included with all Blu-ray copies of Battle: Los Angeles. The Sony Pictures blockbuster will make its way to Blu-ray on June 14, three months ahead of Resistance 3’s September 6th release on the PS3.

This isn’t the first time Sony has placed a PS3 demo on a Sony Pictures Blu-ray disc. A God of War III demo was included with District 9 back in 2009. The Battle: Los Angeles/Resistance 3 connection makes even more sense when you consider some of the background scenery in the film.

Resistance 3 early beta access included with SOCOM 4

Sony keeps the beta train rolling with the announcement that gamers who purchase SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs will receive early access to the Resistance 3 public beta. Sony seems to be knitting some kind of “beta chain” for their major 2011 releases as early access to the SOCOM 4 beta (which is going on right now) was included with copies of Killzone 3.

Both the regular version and the Full Deployment Edition of SOCOM 4 will include a voucher for beta access. And gamers can get their hands on either when the game is released on April 19.

Sony has promised that more details on the Resistance 3 beta program will be released soon.

Resistance 3 looking even more beautiful in leaked footage

We already saw a lengthy showing of Resistance 3‘s multiplayer earlier in the month. Some leaked footage came out of Insomniac’s community day event from the other night, and it’s looking even better. This continuous, uninterrupted clip, shows a seemingly higher fidelity than the previous video, particular with some impressive lighting effects. The frame rate still appears locked at an exceptionally smoothed pace, but the visuals look to bring the game more on par with PlayStation’s other big FPS series, Killzone. Doing this would be commendable enough in single player, but watching a solid combination of graphics and frame rate in multiplayer has me dying to get lost in it.

Resistance 3 releases for the PlayStation 3 on September 6.
