All Articles: Song of the Deep

Xbox Store Today: Song of the Deep, Ghostbusters, The Solus Project, more

The Juno space probe parked itself over Jupiter last week, and the first pictures from the mission were sent back today. So now seems like a good time for The Solus Project to exit Microsoft’s Game Preview and become a full-fledged Xbox One game. Developed by Teotl Studios, The Solus Project is an interstellar exploration game where humanity’s last hope has to find a suitable location for a colony… “You must survive.”

Also available this week is Insomniac’s Song of the Deep, which takes players deep into the briny depths of the ocean for a different kind of adventure into the unknown. Described by Insomniac as a “MetroidVania,” Xbox One owners will guide a young girl named Merryn under the sea in Song of the Deep to search for her missing father.

Hopefully Merryn doesn’t find a Cthulhu-like elder god under the ocean, but if she does, we know who she’ll call… Ghostbusters. Rather than adapt the upcoming movie starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, Activision has released an overhead shooter for the Xbox One that pits four rookies against all the Class Five Full-Roaming Vapors of the world.

And finally this week, Iron Galaxy (the developers of Killer Instinct) are back with Videoball, an Xbox One sports game that mashes together “basketball, football, soccer, first-person shooters, and real-time strategy games.” Sure, why not?

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

Kerbal Space Program, Song of the Deep, Ghostbusters, more added to PS Store

Explore the unknown in this week’s PlayStation Store update…

They say that space is the final frontier, and PS4 owners will get the chance to explore it this week with Kerbal Space Program and Adrift. Kerbal Space Program is a space exploration simulator that’s been available for the PC since last year, and now PS4 players can use it to build rockets and take off for the inky blackness of space. But don’t get too lost out there, or you’ll end up in Adrift, an “immersive first-person experience” about an astronaut helplessly floating amongst the wreckage of a space station.

Other people will say that the deep ocean is the last unexplored location on Earth, and they’re not wrong. Insomniac tapped into this weird world to tell the story of Merryn, a young girl searching for her father underneath the waves in Song of the Deep for the PS4.

Still others will say that life’s biggest mysteries involve “the other side,” and while they aren’t afraid of ghosts, I don’t know if they were expecting Ghostbusters from Activision. Built as a tie-in to the upcoming film, Ghostbusters is an overhead shooter for the PS4 where up to four players can get together for some bustin’ (provided it makes them feel good).

Finally this week, two wacky new sports attempt to scratch that mutliplayer itch on the PS4. Videoball is a bizarre combination of “basketball, football, soccer, first-person shooters, and real-time strategy games” from Iron Galaxy, while Kill Strain is a free-to-play shooter that pits humans against mutants (and its currently exclusively available for PlayStation Plus subscribers).

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new release) after the break. And be sure to visit the PlayStation Blog for the complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts. (more…)

New Retail Releases: Ghostbusters, Song of the Deep, Monster Hunter Generations, More

newreleases071216

I ain’t afraid of no monsters! And it’s a good thing too, because Capcom will launch the latest game in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Generations, for the 3DS this week. Players will be able to go on hundreds of quests as they hunt a new crop of monstrous bosses by themselves or in a group with up to three friends in co-op multiplayer mode.

Monsters of the ocean haunt Insomniac’s side-scrolling Song of the Deep, a new “MetroidVania” available this week for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. As the first game published by GameStop’s GameTrust label, Song of the Deep will introduce players to Merryn, a young girl who goes under the sea to rescue her missing father.

Ghosts and zombies are monsters too, and I’m not afraid of them either… Activision will release Ghostbusters, a tie-in to the upcoming movie starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, for the PS4 and Xbox One. And Capcom will re-release Resident Evil 5 for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Finally this week, Sega will launch 7th Dragon III: Code VFD, the first game in the RPG franchise to be released outside of Japan, for the 3DS.

Insomniac’s Song of the Deep will be released on July 12

Insomniac Games has unveiled a new trailer for their “underwater Metroidvania,” Song of the Deep, and also announced the game will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on July 12. The new trailer dives a bit deeper into Merryn’s search for her father and the decidedly non-cuddly marine life she’ll find under the waves. The Little Mermaid this ain’t.

The developer’s Chief Creative Officer, Brian Hastings, has also penned a tie-in novelization for Song of the Deep, and it’ll be available in stores “soon.”

In addition to its digital release, Song of the Deep will receive a retail launch exclusively through GameStop. The retailer, which currently operates more than 6,900 stores, will publish the game through their GameTrust publishing label.

Insomniac will partner with GameStop to release Song of the Deep this Summer

Insomniac Games is going under the sea for their next game. Song of the Deep is a Metroidvania-style side-scroller that takes place entirely underwater as the young Merryn attempts to save her father from the briny deep. Insomniac isn’t exactly known for side-scrollers, but Song of the Deep is the passion project of Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings, so come hell or high water, it’s full steam ahead for the developer:

Merryn waits all night for her father to return from his fishing voyage. He never does. After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.

In another amazing first, Insomniac has partnered with GameStop to publish Song of the Deep on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One this Summer. GameStop’s 6,900 retail locations will be the exclusive home of Song of the Deep’s disc release… though the game will also be available through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Steam.
