EA turns off all microtransactions in Star Wars: Battlefront II after fan backlash

The run-up to Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s launch has been filled with more fireworks than Luke’s trench run through the Dark Star in the first film. Many fans were disappointed in the beta, and many reviewers took issue with the game’s progression system, which seemed overly-dependent on purchasing in-game currency with real money.

Rather than ignore the outcry, Electronic Arts and DICE responded to these complaints with a statement about the future of the game from DICE’s General Manager, Oskar Gabrielson. According to Gabrielson, the developer and publisher have decided to turn off the online storefront for Battlefront II’s in-game currency. For now, players will only be able to unlock the game’s more advanced features (including the ability to play as Darth Vader) through gameplay.

However, EA and DICE also announced plans to restore Battlefront II’s microtransactions after they rework the game’s progression system:

[A]s we approach the worldwide launch, it’s clear that many of you feel there are still challenges in the design. We’ve heard the concerns about potentially giving players unfair advantages. And we’ve heard that this is overshadowing an otherwise great game. This was never our intention. Sorry we didn’t get this right.

We hear you loud and clear, so we’re turning off all in-game purchases. We will now spend more time listening, adjusting, balancing and tuning. This means that the option to purchase crystals in the game is now offline, and all progression will be earned through gameplay. The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game. We’ll share more details as we work through this.

Star Wars: Battlefront II is now available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Gabrielson’s full statement can be found on Electronic Arts’s official website.

Electronic Arts reiterates that Battlefield 6 and Anthem are coming in 2018

Electronic Arts delivered their quarterly financial report to investors last night, and Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen delivered some (not unexpected) news about the publisher’s 2018 slate of games.

Jorgensen reiterated that the currently untitled Battlefield 6 will be released in 2018, alongside a “full slate” of EA Sports titles (presumably FIFA 19, Madden NFL 19, NHL 19, and NBA Live 19), and BioWare’s Anthem. It looks like multiple in-game events for Star Wars: Battlefront II are also on tap for next year:

The core of our fiscal 2019 is in a full slate of sports titles and their associated live services, plus new live services from Star Wars: Battlefront II. We will add the next Battlefield game and moved into the action genre with Anthem. We expect our subscriber base to continue to grow and our new mobile titles to benefit from players looking for deeper experiences with higher production values.

Later in the presentation, CEO Andrew Wilson added that EA Sports is planning something connected to next year’s World Cup:

On World Cup, we don’t have any news to announce right now, but at EA Sports we have a long tradition of celebrating the World Cup and bringing it to life for fans, stretching back to the World Cup 1998. So as it gets closer, the world’s largest sporting event, we’ll announce more details on how we’ll continue this tradition.

Electronic Arts’s stock is down more than 4% in trading on the stock market so far today.

See the developers of Star Wars: Battlefront II discuss the game’s story at D23 Expo 2017

Star Wars is front and center at this year’s D23 Expo, and while Disney probably won’t release the next trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we did get a new look at Star Wars: Battlefront II. Developers from DICE, Criterion, and Motive, along with the game’s cast, got together to take fans “Behind the Story” in a new video:

Star Wars: Battlefront II is bringing an all new hero into the fold with the introduction of Iden Versio, Commander of the Imperial special forces team known as the Inferno Squad. Fans were treated to an appearance by the game’s lead actress Janina Gavankar, who plays Iden, and a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group, Steve Blank. In addition to discussing the single-player campaign that tells a story from the unique perspective of the empire, Janina and Steve introduced a new behind-the-scenes look at the development of this original Star Wars story featured in the game.

Star Wars: Battlefront II will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 17.

Star Wars: Battlefront II’s Open Beta begins on October 6

Electronic Arts and DICE have announced plans to launch Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s Open Beta for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 6. Players will be able to participate in the Open Beta until October 9, but fans who pre-order the game will be able to try it out two days earlier (on October 4).

Community Manager Jared Petty posted a few more details about the Open Beta on the PlayStation Blog, and here’s what players should expect to find in the pre-release test:

Galactic Assault on Naboo

  • Join the Separatist droid army or the Republic Clones on the streets of Theed in massive 40 player multiplayer melees.
  • Choose from four distinct trooper classes:
    • Assault Troopers are classic flankers, pushing the line forward and advancing the front.
    • Heavy Troopers use their high-powered weapons and personal body shields to take ground and hold it.
    • Officers power up their teammates with buffs and deploy remote weapons to support their allies.
    • Specialists lay traps and snipe from a distance.
  • Control beloved Star Wars heroes, pilot prequel-era vehicles, and more.

The Open Beta will also include “an epic Starfighter Assault set during the original trilogy era” and players will be able to “[pilot] an assortment of Star Wars’ greatest ships in an objective-based, multi-stage battle.” Additional details about this half of the Open Beta will be revealed during this year’s Gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany.

Star Wars: Battlefront II will be released on November 14.
