Will Zelda: A Link Between Worlds’ Item Shop Really “Transform” the Franchise?

According to the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will, in the words of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, “transform the way you play Zelda.” After years of following a consistent, popular formula, Nintendo has finally seen the need for progression. The next Zelda game will “buck the mold” of traditional Zelda gameplay with one revolutionary change: items will now be rented from and bought at a shop, rather than found in a dungeon. (more…)

We knew it was coming sometime during the tenth month of 2013, but Nintendo has gotten more specific and confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD will be released on October 4.

Fans of the Zelda series will get a chance to play a game a bit earlier during the Seattle stop of the Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert tour on September 12. Demo kiosks featuring The Wind Waker HD and this Fall’s other Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS, will be installed in the lobby of Benaroya Hall.

Nintendo also plans to display fan-created artwork during the show. If you want your Zelda-themed piece to be considered, apply for Nintendo’s “Fan Art Challenge” on their Facebook Page.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 coming to the 3DS this year

zeldalinktothepast2-1Nintendo announced the first original Legend of Zelda game for the 3DS this afternoon and, as expected, it’s a sequel to the Super NES fan favorite A Link to the Past. The game, which is tentatively known as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, will be released during the 2013 holiday season.

The sequel will employ the same top-down perspective that fans have come to know and love, but this time with the addition of the 3D abilities the 3DS is known for. Besides a multi-leveled world, Link is also able to transform into a drawing and walk along walls (and through cracks in the wall) in this new Zelda adventure.

A gameplay video for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 made its debut during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. You can check it out on YouTube now or download it from the 3DS eShop.

Miyamoto considering Majora’s Mask remake, Link to the Past remake/sequel for 3DS

With the success of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, it was only inevitable that Nintendo would quickly offer up another adventure featuring Link and friends on the handheld console. The only question was, would it be another 3D remake of one of the classics amongst the back catalogue, or would it be an entirely new adventure? Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma previously confirmed that an original Zelda game for the handheld was in the works, but that may not be the only one.

Speaking to IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that the next Zelda game might be a rerelease of the N64’s Majora’s Mask or a project somehow tied to the Super NES title A Link to the Past. Whether that’s a remake, a sequel, or something else entirely was left up in the air.

Here’s what the famed developer told IGN at E3: “We haven’t quite decided yet, whether we’re going to do A Link to the Past, because there’s also the possibility of doing a remake of Majora’s Mask. This is something we’ve certainly been talking about and doing a little bit of experimenting with, to figure out which way we’re going to go.”

While Majora’s Mask may be easier to develop, A Link to the Past may find a wider audience with those gamers who didn’t play it the first time around (can you believe it’s 20 years old?). The top-down RPG is considered the best in the series by many, and Miyamoto first expressed an interest in a 3DS remake last November.

Which game would you want?

Original Zelda game coming to 3DS; Majora’s Mask remake still being considered

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is just a few weeks away, but Nintendo plans to keep the Zelda train rolling with an original 3DS game (that’s not a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, which features an actual Zelda train) and possibly a Majora’s Mask remake.

Speaking to Portugese game site MyGames, series Producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that pre-production work on the next Zelda game, which will be a totally original tale for the 3DS, has begun:

“We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.”

And what about Majora’s Mask? Aonuma had this to say about a 3DS remake of the divisive N64 entry in the series:

“It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about. But recently we released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake. We are considering the idea, but it didn’t seem right to launch a remake one after another, so the next Zelda game on 3DS will be original.”
