Turok: Dinosaur Hunter arrives on the Switch on March 18

“I… Am… Turok!”

Nightdive Studios has confirmed that their remaster of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter will make its way to the Nintendo Switch on March 18. The first person shooter was originally released for the Nintendo 64 all the way back in 1997, and would go on to become one of the platform’s signature games.

In addition to an enhanced visual presentation, Nightdive tweaked Turok’s re-release to include improved gameplay and level design:

Turok is back and no dinosaur is safe! When it was first released in 1997, Turok introduced gamers to a world teeming with cunning enemies, traps, puzzles and deadly weapons all within a vast 3D environment ready to explore. Now the classic game has been restored and enhanced with a new visual engine and exciting new features to sink your teeth into!

The Lost Land… A world where time has no meaning – and evil knows no bounds. Torn from a world long gone, the time traveling warrior Turok has found himself thrust into a savage land torn by conflict. An evil overlord known as ‘The Campaigner’ seeks to shred the fabric of time and rule the universe using an ancient artifact known as The Chronoscepter. The Chronoscepter was shattered thousands of years ago in an effort to keep it from falling into evil hands. The Campaigner has constructed a massive focusing array which he plans to use to magnify and pervert the power of the Chronoscepter in order to shatter the barriers between the ages and rule the universe. Turok has vowed to find the eight pieces of the Chronoscepter spread throughout the Lost Land and put an end to The Campaigner’s evil plot…

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter will be available to download through the Switch eShop for $19.99.

Pit People: Full Version, Turok, Turok 2, more added to Xbox Store

Strange worlds full of bizarre creatures are the highlight of today’s Xbox Games Store update.

Developers don’t get much more bizarre than The Behemoth, and the “Full Version” of their turn-based RTS, Pit People, is now available to download for the Xbox One. Available through the Game Preview program since last year, the game’s final update will pit players against “sinister electrobots, deadly vampires, and brutally adorable cupcake people” as they travel across an apocalyptic wonderland.

Compared to a cupcake packing heat, a dinosaur with a gun seems almost normal. But there’s nothing normal about Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. The late 90s shooters have been remastered by Nightdive Studios, and they’re also available to download for the Xbox One beginning today.

You can learn more about the rest of today’s additions to the Xbox Games Store after the break. (more…)

Turok and Turok 2 will be available to download for Xbox One on March 2

Nightdive Studios has announced that Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil will be available to download for the Xbox One on Friday, March 2.

The first two games in the Turok franchise helped fuel the first FPS boom on consoles after they were originally released for the Nintendo 64 in the late 90s. These remastered versions will be priced at $19.99 apiece, and will include enhanced graphics powered by a new visual engine:

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
A world where time has no meaning – and evil knows no bounds. Torn from a world long gone, the time traveling warrior Turok has found himself thrust into a savage land torn by conflict. An evil overlord known as The Campaigner seeks to shred the fabric of time and rule the universe using an ancient artifact known as The Chronoscepter.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Having defeated the Campaigner, Turok throws the Chronocepter into a waiting volcano to destroy it. Unfortunately the blast awakens an even deadlier force – The Primagen. Once again a Turok is tasked with restoring peace to the land and stopping the Primagen from merging Earth with the nether world.

Night Dive Studios has announced plans to bring remastered versions of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil to the Xbox One:

Night Dive added a number of improvements to the remastered edition of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (including support for high resolution and widescreen displays, improved gameplay and level design, and Steam Achievements) that launched on Steam this past December. Turok 2’s remastered re-release is still in the works for the digital storefront, so it might be a while before either game comes to the Xbox One.

A later tweet confirmed that Night Dive is also considering a PS4 release for Turok and Turok 2, but they don’t have anything to announce at this time.

Remastered re-release of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is now available to download on the PC

“I… Am… Turok!”

Night Dive Studios has reached into the past once again and pulled Turok: Dinosaur Hunter into the present. The first person shooter, originally published by Acclaim, was all the rage back in 1997 and this PC re-release adds a number of improvements for modern day players including support for high resolution and widescreen displays, improved gameplay and level design, and Steam Achievements.

Stephen Kick, the CEO of Night Dive Studios, is very proud of his studio’s latest remaster: “When Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was first released it was nothing short of revolutionary. To that point, no game had ever offered the combination of graphics and an open world environment that Turok featured. We are very excited to have had the opportunity to bring this great franchise back to life and to be able to share this great title with today’s gaming audience.”

Night Dive will remaster Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2 for modern PCs

turokdinosaurhunter-header

If you were a teenager in the late 90s, you probably spent a lot of time playing Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil for the Nintendo 64. That’s because the pair of games, which were developed by Acclaim, were two of the biggest first person shooters available at the time. Eventually, both titles were also released for the PC as well. And as of right now, they’re going to be re-released on the PC in “modernized” versions, courtesy of Night Dive Studios.

According to the developer, they plan to restore both games by adding enhanced graphics and making other improvements to the nearly 20-year-old Turok titles. These tweaks will make Dinosaur Hunter and Seeds of Evil more accessible to modern players, with both eventually scheduled to be available exclusively through digital distribution platforms like Steam, GOG, and the Humble Bundle Store.

Here’s what Stephen Kick, CEO and Founder of Night Dive Studios, had to say about the announcement: “When Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was first released it was nothing short of revolutionary. To that point, no game had ever offered the combination of graphics and an open world environment that Turok featured. We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring this great franchise back to life and to be able to share these great titles with today’s gaming audience.”

Night Dive is perhaps best known for their restoration of System Shock 2. Hopefully, they’ll use the same amount of care in remastering Turok for a new generation of players, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
