VGX 2013 Trailer: Quantum Break

Remedy’s Creative Director, Sam Lake, showed up at the 2013 VGX Awards to talk about Quantum Break. Quantum Break is your typical “science gone awry” story, but Lake promises that the time powers granted to heroes Jack Joyce and Beth Wilder and “main bad guy” Paul Serene thanks to the accident at Riverport University will provide a new way to experience a third-person action game.

Quantum Break (or its live-action television show counterpart) still doesn’t have a release date, but PS4 owners should know that it is an Xbox One exclusive.

GTA5 is “Game of the Year” at the 2013 VGX Awards

vgx-header

The first ever VGX Awards (formerly known as the Spike TV Video Game Awards) were held last night and the best games of 2013 were once again crowned by GameTrailers.com’s Geoff Keighley (with an assist from Community‘s Joel McHale). The general consensus among the Internetatti is that the show still doesn’t know what it wants to be and that the “intimate studio setting” (and McHale) made the whole thing feel a bit bizarre. But what about the award winners?

In what is sure to be the first of many, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V was named “Game of the Year” by the VGX Advisory Council. Rockstar’s crime saga also took home “Best Soundtrack.” But, the developer missed out on “Studio of the Year” honors. That award went to Naughty Dog for their work on The Last of Us. Their apocalyptic story was also awarded “Best PlayStation Game.” “Best Voice Actor” (Troy Baker), and “Best Voice Actress” (Ashley Johnson). Other multiple award winners include indie sensation Gone Home (“Best PC Game” and “Best Independent Game”) and BioShock Infinite (“Best Shooter” and “Best Song in a Game”).

A complete list of this year’s winners, including the remaining genre awards, “Best Xbox Game” (the surprising Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons), and “Best Nintendo Game” (Super Mario 3D World), can be found after the break. (more…)

VGX 2013 Trailer: Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Here it is, your first look at the next-generation version of Tomb Raider. As we all expected, the “Definitive Edition” will include upgraded graphics and all of the previously released multiplayer DLC. Be sure to check out the trailer above, as I think Lara Croft kills something like 50 people. But classily. Because she has a British accent.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, Nixxes, and United Front Games and will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on January 28.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will launch on PS4, Xbox One in January

tombraider-definitiveA banner advertisement that randomly appears on Spike TV’s VGX Awards site has confirmed that Tomb Raider will be coming to the PS4 and Xbox One early next year in a “Definitive Edition.”

The contents of the Definitive Edition are currently unknown, but its a good bet that the game’s three multiplayer DLC packs (“Caves & Cliffs,” “1939,” and “Shipwrecked”) will be included on the disc. A graphical bump to take advantage of the additional horsepower available in the next-generation systems is also highly likely.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be released on January 28 and the re-release’s first trailer will make its debut during tonight’s VGX Awards show broadcast at VGXLive.com.

Bungie will embrace its Destiny on September 9, 2014

destiny-header

In 2001, after the launch of Halo: Combat Evolved, Bungie co-founder Jason Jones dropped the following bit of wisdom during a postmortem Q&A:

There should be a stage in every product where the ludicrous is thought possible, where the team blazes trails right to the edge of the abyss in a hundred directions. Only through great risks are great things truly achieved.

Today, Jones’ team is ready to take their next step into the future with the announcement that Destiny will be released for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on September 9, 2014. This is a bit beyond the game’s originally projected “Spring 2014” launch, but its in keeping with Bungie’s desire to only ship a game they can be proud of.

To that end, Community Manager David Dague has revealed that the game’s multiplayer beta is currently set for a Summer 2013 start date on the PS3 and PS4. In the more immediate future, Dague has also confirmed that Destiny will appear that Destiny will make an appearance during this weekend’s VGX Awards show and that “a new detail or two” will be announced.

vgx-header

The nominees for the 2013 VGX Awards (previously known as the Video Game Awards) have been announced by Spike TV and it looks like this year’s show will be dominated by Grand Theft Auto V, BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider. Those four games, along with Super Mario 3D World, will duke it out for this year’s “Game of the Year” honor.

Grand Theft Auto V lead all games with four additional nominations (“Best PlayStation,” “Best Xbox,” “Action Adventure,” and “Soundtrack”) as well as a “Best Studio” nomination for Rockstar North, “Best Actor” nomination for Steven Ogg, and two “Best Song” nods. The Fulbright Company’s Gone Home leads this year’s indie charge with two nominations (“Best PC” and “Best Independent”) and a “Best Studio” nomination for the developer.

And in a fun twist, Troy Baker will be competing against himself in the “Best Actor” category as his Joel (from The Last of Us) will do battle with his Booker DeWitt (from BioShock Infinite).

The 2013 VGX Awards will air on Spike TV on Saturday, December 7. A complete list of this year’s nominees can be found after the break. (more…)
