Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us wins ten statues at 2014 DICE Awards

When Santa Claus asks if you’ve been naughty or nice, if you’re a game developer, you might want to answer “naughty.” During last night’s DICE Awards in Las Vegas, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us took home the top prize in ten categories (out of 13 possible nominations). The only other game to win multiple awards was BioShock Infinite, which took home two (Action Game of the Year and Oustanding Achievement in Original Music Composition).

With such a big haul, The Last of Us naturally took home Game of the Year honors. The game also won Adventure Game of the Year, Oustanding Achievement in Game Direction, Oustanding Achievement in Story, Oustanding Achievement in Animation, Oustanding Achievement in Art Direction, Oustanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Oustanding Achievement in Sound Design, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, and Outstanding Character Performance (for Ashley Johnson’s portrayal of Ellie).

A few other games did manage to wrestle a few awards away from Naughty Dog, but that’s mostly because The Last of Us didn’t qualify for every category. For example, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons won Downloadable Game of the Year, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds won Handheld Game of the Year, and Plants vs Zombies 2 won Casual Game of the Year.

XBL Store Today: Xbox One, XCOM: Enemy Within

xboxone-logoThe big day has finally arrived… the Xbox One is now available! To celebrate, Microsoft has opened the Xbox One section on the Xbox Live Game Store and stocked it with 23 launch games. The full “Day One” launch lineup includes:

And if you didn’t camp out all night for an Xbox One, 2K Games’ XCOM: Enemy Within was also added to the Xbox Live Game Store today. It is available to download from the Xbox 360 storefront.

XCOM: Enemy Within, Injustice: Ultimate Edition, more added to PS Store

The last pre-PS4 PlayStation Store update is full of this Fall’s biggest PS3 releases…

  • 2K Games released the alien invasion expansion XCOM: Enemy Within.
  • WB Games released a bigger Injustice: Gods Among Us package with the “Ultimate Edition.”
  • Ratchet & Clank rode off into the sunset in Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus.
  • And Sony expanded the Wonderbook line of games with Diggs Nightcrawler and Walking With Dinosaurs.

Also available this week is a Cross-Buy version of Flower that will add the title to the game library on your PS3, Vita, and PS4.

New Releases: PS4, XCOM: Enemy Within, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, More

Part One of this year’s next-generation console extravaganza begins this week with the launch of PlayStation 4. If you haven’t already ordered one, Sony’s new machine may be hard to find, but peripherals like the PS4 Camera are plentiful. However, if you have the next-gen plunge, here’s what gaming opportunities you can expect to see on store shelves this week:

If the next-generation of consoles is still a bit too expensive for you (or you’re waiting for the impending Xbox One launch), there’s also a few current-generation games to keep us busy this week. XCOM: Enemy Within, the expansion to last year’s massively well-received XCOM: Enemy Unknown, will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. And the possibly final voyage of Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, will be released for the PS3. Finally, Mario & Sonic square off again in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games on the Wii U.

XCOM: Enemy Within trailer brings “War Machines” to the fight

“War Machines,” the latest trailer for Firaxis Games’ XCOM: Enemy Within, made its debut at this weekend’s PAX Prime. The trailer depicts many of the new abilities your XCOM soldiers will have at their disposal including biological augmentations (such as telekinesis), cybernetic enhancements, and massive mechs. The aliens will counter with two new enemy types including a hulking mech of their own (known as Mechtoids) and the ghost-like Seekers.

The PC version of XCOM: Enemy Within, which requires a copy of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, will be released on November 12. The expansion will also be available as a standalone release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on the same day.
