Sure, Episode 8 felt a little like a step backward, but that’s only because it was preceded by the outstanding Episode 7. With Episode 9, it is clear 343 Industries is gearing up for the sprint to the finish. (more…)

The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition swings onto Wii U on March 5

We knew that The Amazing Spider-Man would spin his web on the Wii U in an “Ultimate Edition” containing the main game and all of the previously released downloadable content. But now we know when… Activision will release the game for the Wii U on March 5.

In addition to all four previously released DLC packs (including the “Amazing Stan Lee Adventure”), the Ultimate Edition will include a pair of Wii U-specific features:

Transform the Wii U GamePad with the Oscorp OsPhone – Access Spidey’s in-game cell phone via the GamePad to accept new challenges, navigate the city, and manage his upgrades.

Off-Screen Mode – Lets users swap instantly between playing on the big screen and the GamePad whenever they choose.

According to Amazon, The Amazing Spider-Man: Ultimate Edition will be priced at $59.99. Let’s hope that’s a typo.

Angry Birds Trilogy sells a million; Wii U, Wii versions dropping this year

AngryBirdsCoverThe Angry Birds fly high regardless of what platform they’re on. Activision has revealed that their HD compilation of the first three games, Angry Birds Trilogy, has “soared” past one million copies sold worldwide. The 3DS, PS3, and Xbox 360 game was originally released in September. To celebrate (and in a quest for more money), Activision and Rovio have announced that Angry Birds Trilogy will be released on the Wii U and the Wii by the end of the year.

“It was certainly satisfying to see Angry Birds gameplay adapt so well to other platforms in 2012,” said Petri Jarvilehto, Executive Vice President of Games for Rovio. “The features specific to the Wii U are very intriguing to us, so we’re excited to release this version to fans.”

Those Wii U-specific features will likely involve the use of the Wii U GamePad to fling birds at those crafty swine.

Hotline Miami: A Piece of Poetic Prose

hotlinemiami-header

If you look at it purely as a video game, Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami is a top-down shooter with a retro palette and a modern amount of blood spray. But Hotline Miami isn’t just an ordinary game and I felt it would be unfair to give it an ordinary review (though, I believe it’s worthy of perfect score, for reasons that I hope are clear). What follows is a “prose poem” that tries to get to the heart of Hotline Miami. I hope you like it. (more…)

Rumor: Is this the PS4’s controller?

rumoredps4controllerThe PlayStation 4/Orbis rumors continue to leak out of Sony like… well, like a rumor leaking out of Sony. I mean really, the consolemaker is just terrible about keeping secrets. Thank god they don’t run the Witness Protection Program.

This time, Destructoid has gotten their hands on a picture that is purported to show the PS4’s controller, up close and personal. A separate inside source, speaking to IGN, has stated the controller is real, but that it’s a PS4 prototype and not representative of the final design.

The image (click to enlarge) shows a standard-looking DualShock controller with a massive touchscreen affixed to the center. The analog sticks have been changed from their traditional convex shape to more closely resemble the concave sticks on the Xbox 360 controller. Finally, the d-pad buttons have been moved closer together, though they still don’t form the “plus” that the Nintendo-style pad is known for.

Oh, and what’s that blue light on the top?

Hopefully we’ll find out the answer to all of these questions next Wednesday, February 20, during Sony’s “The Future” presentation.
