Mario Kart 8 Wii U Bundle and free game offer announced

Nintendo really wants to make it worth your while to purchase Mario Kart 8. If you already own a Wii U and you purchase the next kart racer starring Mario and all his friends, you’ll be entitled to a free download of one of four Wii U games: New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U.

However, if you don’t own a Wii U, starting May 30, you can purchase one as part of a Mario Kart 8 Bundle (priced at $329.99) that includes the console, the game, a Wii Wheel, and a Mario Red Wii Remote Plus. A free download of New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U is also included with the console bundle.

If you still need convincing, Nintendo hopes a closer look at the game will make you push that pre-order button. The publisher has posted video walkthroughs of all 32 tracks (and all eight Battle Arenas) on Mario Kart 8’s official website.

This is all on top of the news that the game will be adding two more characters (Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina) and several new items. The Super Horn pushes away nearby drivers and any projectiles sent flying your way (including the dreaded Blue Shell) while the Crazy Eight is “a swirl of eight different items that lucky players can use one by one.”

You can check out the newly announced drivers and items in the trailer above. And don’t forget, Mario Kart 8 will be available exclusively for the Wii U on May 30.

Movie Mario Bob Hoskins has died at age 71

bobhoskinsThe BBC is reporting that Bob Hoskins, the man who brought “Mario Mario” to life in 1993’s Super Mario Bros. movie and played Eddie Valiant in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, has died at the age of 71. Hoskins had been battling Parkinson’s Disease since 2012 and his agent said he died of pneumonia on Tuesday, “surrounded by family.”

John “Luigi Mario” Leguizamo wrote in his autobiography, Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas, and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends, that he and Hoskins bonded on the Super Mario Bros. set by drinking copious amounts of alcohol and laughing about how stupid the whole thing was. Hoskins had a few other choice words about his most-hated role for The Guardian in 2007:

“The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Bros. It was a f*****’ nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F*****’ nightmare. F*****’ idiots.”

Our thoughts go out to Hoskins’ family and friends.

Child of Light, Daylight, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Rambo, more added to PS Store

amazingspider-man2-header

This week’s PlayStation Store update is very thinky and very shooty. There’s definitely something for everyone… whether you love to use your head or shoot people in theirs.

The thinky side includes Child of Light (PS3, PS4), Ubisoft’s side-scrolling RPG; Daylight (PS4), Atlus’ procedurally-generated horror game; and Yu-Gi-Oh! Millenium Duels (PS3), the latest game in the popular CCG series.

The shooty side is a bit more full with vertically-scrolling shooter Raiden IV: Overkill (PS3), another game adaptation of Rambo (PS3), and the puzzle-shooting of PSone Classic Bust-A-Move 4 (PS3). Also, thugs are prone to shooting at Spider-Man, so let’s throw The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (PS3, PS4) in this category as well.

For those gamers who are looking for something completely different, this week’s final two releases don’t fit in either category. Bandai Namco’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle (PS3) is a fighting game based on the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga series and Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends (PS3) is the latest game in the hack and slash series.

More details on all of these games can be found after the break and a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

After announcing the Xbox One edition of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would miss it’s planned April 29 launch, Activision has gone ahead and uploaded the game to the Xbox Live Game Store. Xbox One owners are able to buy, download, and play the game, so this doesn’t appear to be an accident on Activision’s part. Microsoft’s Major Nelson even promoted the release of the game on his blog.

The Xbox 360 edition of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is also available to download through the Xbox Live Game Store:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($59.99 – Xbox One, $49.99 – Xbox 360)
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 takes place outside the events of the 2nd film in a unique story where Spider-Man discovers a larger threat to NYC that has turned the underworld upside down. Villains from the film and classic Marvel characters are woven together in a twisted web of adrenaline-fueled, web-slinging action that puts players on a collision course with an evil far beyond Spider-Man’s reckoning.

Hopefully, Activision will be able to explain what happened to the retail release of of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soon.

DriveClub finally has a release date: October 7

After numerous doubts and delays, Sony’s DriveClub finally has an official release date.

The racer from Evolution Studios was initially set to release during the PlayStation 4’s launch period last November but was later pushed to early 2014. But last month, Sony said the developers had “gone back to the drawing board” on the title. But today, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, has announced (via the PlayStation Blog), that DriveClub will be released on October 7.

Yoshida noted that the game also has a new Director, Paul “Rushy” Rustchynsky, who was in charge of 2012’s MotorStorm RC:

“With Rushy in the lead, we know DriveClub will deliver on its initial promise to be a truly next-gen racing title for our PS4 portfolio. We are really proud of the incredible work the team has produced — their tenacity and passionate pursuit of excellence is admirable, and DriveClub will be all the better for it.”

However, releasing on October 7 may be a mistake for DriveClub. The game will be joined by a trio of additional games also set for release that day: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Morder, Alien: Isolation, and Dragon Age: Inquisition.
