Rumor: Alan Wake 2 announcement imminent

With only hours before the start of E3, the air is electric with anticipation. And it was ramped up a notch with this mysterious tweet from Sam Lake, the lead writer of Alan Wake.
The link leads you to a blog called This House of Dreams, written by the ambiguous Samantha. While this has led to some speculation that there will be a character named Samantha in the next game, it could also be Sam Lake using the female form of his own name. The blog, created back in February, details Samantha’s life as she buys an old house to renovate. Fans of the game will discover several allusions to Alan Wake within the various posts.
Coupled with this treasure trove of mysteries is the fact that the domain registry information for the AlanWake2.com URL was updated on June 4. Is the update tied to a potential E3 reveal? We’ll find out soon enough.

Mega Man creator’s Soul Sacrifice is coming to North America
While Soul Sacrifice, the initial PS Vita offering from legendary video game creator and producer Keiji Inafune, was announced a few weeks ago for release in Japan, there was no word on other territories. However, fans will have no need to organise an Operation: Rainfall-esque mission, with the recent announcement that the game is set for release in North America. Inafune, or INAFKING as he likes to be credited, explained that the game will explore the themes of sacrifice and cruelty, which he associates with reality, in a fantasy setting.
“What I wanted to illustrate in this game was a “reality blended into a fantasy world.” The word “fantasy” normally points to a story that is fictitious; however, with Soul Sacrifice I wanted to illustrate a “reality” within a fantasy that wasn’t sugar-coated. It’s not about focusing on the strange, but to flip the commonly held concept of what a fantasy theme should be with the concept of “reality.”
Cruelty is a reality in our world, and we have to make sacrifices and pay costs on a daily basis. I wanted to blend this “reality” theme into a fantasy world, one filled with magic, and create a new type of gaming experience that relied on the player making sacrifices in order to obtain great power.
There is a “dark pleasure” lying in between fiction and reality that none of us knew was there. If you simply think of it as a “dark fantasy,” then your expectations will be betrayed – but in a good way. Please look forward to Soul Sacrifice. It will be a game that players around the world will surely enjoy.”
The game is being developed by Inafune’s new company, Comcept, who have tasked themselves with generating strong, original concepts and tackling what they have dubbed “Japan’s creative crisis.” The game will also feature music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama, the former responsible for the amazing soundtrack heard in the criticall acclaimed Wii JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles.

Big Huge Games gets saved by Epic proposition
Sometimes there are stories that make you smile to the point of tears, like when “Firefly” was cancelled, but because of the vocal support of fans, Serenity was born on the big screen. This is one of those.
While people are still trying to sort through the smoke and debris that arose from the crash of Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios, amidst the firm’s ongoing debacle with the Rhode Island state government, it seemed as though Big Huge Games was caught up in a mess they had no part of creating. 38 Games was working on Project Copernicus, an MMORPG which may yet still find a home at EA, but the fact is 38 Studios only released one game, Kingdom of Reckonings: Amular, an RPG developed by Big Huge Games that was retooled for the Amular universe after their acquisition in 2009.
So yesterday’s news is more than welcome. Michael Capps, President of Gears of War developer Epic Games, announced that Epic will be creating a new studio in Baltimore, comprised of many ex-BHG employees. He revealed that the heads of Big Head Games approached Epic with the idea of setting up a new studio and wanting to borrow an Epic IP as a jumping off point for a new game, but that while Epic had reservations about whether they had the financial support in place to do so, they had coincidentally been considering growing their own team, a task which Capps describes as “impossible.”
“It’ll take a while to find space, set up desks and PCs, purchase sufficient Nerf weaponry and Dr. Pepper, etc. But some of these folks have been going too long without a paycheck to wait for that. So, as soon as we can, we’re going to try to get people working down here at Epic headquarters in Cary, NC as contractors… There’s a million things to work out. How many of the team can we hire? What will it be called? What will they be working on? We don’t know all the answers yet. Please give us some time to figure it out; we hope to have more to share soon.”
Looks like Big Huge Games is the little engine that could, and we look forward to more news from their new iteration soon.

Robotoki reveals another zombie game… world yawns
Zombies. There is no escaping them, no matter what Jesse Eisenberg preached in Zombieland. Zombies are here to stay for quite some time it would seem, as indie game studio Robotoki announced their first title, Human Element, a zombie survival game, will debut in 2015. Robert Bowling, the company’s President and former Creative Strategist at Infinity Ward, said of the game, “Their greatest strength is the fear that [zombies] instil in us, the survivors, that unreasonable fear. Unreasonable fear that leads us to do unreasonable things to survive.”
While the description sounds very similar to Naughty Dog’s upcoming game The Last Of Us, and the poster echoes the classic Left 4 Dead, Bowling’s new company may be able to offer more than run, shoot and hide. The game will feature a character creation system, where you choose a class – Action, Intelligence, or Stealth – as well as a separate identity or starting scenario, but there is still only a choice of three: survive alone, survive with a partner, or survive while protecting a young child. Hopefully these various combinations will offer much retail value, with Bowling placing a special emphasis on survival on both a physical and moral level.
Will you have to feed a baby human flesh? We won’t know for another three years when the game is distributed across every conceivable platform, from “next genertation consoles” to PCs to mobile phones.

Insomniac reveals Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault for PSN
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lombax mechanic Ratchet and his sentient robot sidekick Clank later this year, Insomniac Games are currently retooling three PS2 games from the series for an HD re-release. The Ratchet & Clank Collection (or Ratchet & Clank Trilogy as it is known in PAL territories) will feature, the original Ratchet & Clank, as well as its two sequels, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal.
In addition to all this though, Insomniac have heeded their fans’ wishes and created a brand new adventure featuring the galaxy-saving duo, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, exclusive to the PlayStation Network.
“Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault is a fun-sized Ratchet adventure which will be available for download exclusively on the PlayStation Store. We’ve returned to the series’ classic feel, camera, controls and weapons, while innovating and giving you a whole new way to play,” said Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac Games.
Since Insomniac likes to rename everything for the European market, the game will be known there as the rather more trite and non-suggestive Ratchet & Clank: Q-Force. While discussing the announcement, Insomniac Community Manager James Stevenson stated that the new title would be “closer to Quest for Booty than A Crack in Time,” and also that there would be a region-free physical edition release in Europe as well as the digital download.

Guardians of Middle-Earth coming to PSN, XBLA this Fall

To tie-in with Peter Jackson’s upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment has announced plans for a new multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game set within the Tolkien universe. In development at Monolith Productions, Guardians of Middle-Earth will be available this Fall, ahead of the film’s December 14, 2012 opening.
According to Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President of Production and Development at WBIE, the company hopes that the downloadable title for both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network will recreate the success of MOBAs on PC, such as DOTA and League of Legends, in the console market: “The MOBA genre is wildly popular with PC players and we are excited to bring it to consoles through the lore of Middle-Earth. The heroes and villains of Middle-Earth are crafted in a way that perfectly intersects with MOBA game features, allowing the development team to create guardians with deep skills and abilities for gamers to master.”
The game will feature five versus five engagements, either with 10 live players or with AI combatants, as well as standard MOBA traits such as voice-chat and in-game currency. Although there will initially be 20 characters to choose from, including Gandalf the Grey, Sauron, Gollum and Thrain II, father to Thorin, more will be added as the release date of the film draws nearer.

Troubled THQ calls in ex-Naughty Dog Jason Rubin for President

Despite rumours of game cancellations and fighting off a potential NASDAQ delisting, Darksiders-developer THQ appears defiant as they continue to shift their focus away from licensed games towards wholly-owned AAA core titles. While there was a collective intake of breath when it was recently announced Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President of Core Games, would be leaving along with Core Studios Senior Vice President David Davis, THQ has temporarily silenced critics by hiring Jason Rubin, co-founder of Naughty Dog, as their new President.
Brian Farrell, who will remain as THQ Chairman and CEO during the reshuffle, sang Rubin’s praises: “Jason’s proven track record in the industry speaks for itself, and he is one of the brightest minds in the business. We believe he can be a game changer and can contribute immensely to executing on our strategy of delivering quality connected core game experiences.”
Rubin, co-creator and director of PlayStation titles such as Crash Bandicoot and Jax & Daxter, left Naughty Dog in 2004, three years after the developer was acquired by Sony. He then went on to co-create media mash-up tool Flektor along with Jason Kay, who has also been snapped up by THQ. Kay, having worked for Activision and HBO in an advisory capacity, has been appointed to the role of Chief Strategy Officer.
While these key appointments are unlikely to help solve THQ’s immediate problems on the stock exchange, it does signal that the company will continue its shift into a core games market. Coupled with Rubin’s expertise in creating and maintaining new IPs, THQ’s releases from 2013 onwards will hopefully have some of the magic that sparkled in Naughty Dog’s early hits.

Snapshot puzzling its way onto PSN, Vita this Fall
Indie developer Retro Affect have announced that their debut game, Snapshot, a 2D platform-puzzler, will be heading to the PlayStation Network and PS Vita this Fall, and will handily feature cross-platform saves. Nominated for an IGF Award back in 2009, developers Kyle Pulver and David Carrigg have since been expanding and polishing the game for a console release.
In what sounds like a simple yet brilliant idea, the game features an amnesiac robot named Picon on an adventure to discover his origins. He has in his possession a powerful camera that can take photos of the surrounding landscape, and to paste that photo elsewhere. Players will then be able to manipulate the photographs in order to overcome obstacles or solve puzzles.
As Retro Affect told the PlayStation Blog, “Our goal is to make awesome games that resonate with the feel of classic gaming flavor, but with a splash of something fresh.” With the current Fall schedule oversaturated by sequels and first-person shooters, Snapshot could very well follow in the footsteps of Journey, offering something fun and unique.
Retro Affect have plans to push the game onto Windows PC, Mac OSX, and Linux after the release on Sony’s systems.
