XBLA Today: Xotic

Xotic is the only Xbox Live Arcade release this week. The game is a high score-focused first person shooter, a gametype that casued developer WXP Games to state “there’s never been a game like this before.” Truth in advertising or puffery of the highest order? We’ll let you be the judge:
Think you know shooters? Think again. Xotic is a completely new hybrid; rack up massive point chains, play on 23 levels, and compete globally. Create transparent aerial landing platforms while going for some arcade-style point pick-ups. Use power-ups to boost your abilities. And fire up eight upgradeable weapons to combat the minions of the Orb. All while roaming beautiful but mysterious environments. You’ll see stuff you’ve never seen before, because there’s never been a game like this before.
Xotic is available to download for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Jurassic Park, Red Dead Redemption added to PS Store
Following Microsoft’s lead, Sony has reorganized the PlayStation Store into PS3 Games (titles that were first released as disc-based games) and PSN Games (titles exclusive to the PS Store). Best of all, on the first day of this new store setup they’ve made one of the best disc-based PS3 games ever available to download. I refer, of course, to Red Dead Redemption.
The original redemption of John Marsten, as well as his cowboy antics battling the undead hordes in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, are now available to download for $39.99 and $19.99, respectively.
meanwhile, the new “PSN Games” storefront will receive three new games on its first day of existence:
Jurassic Park: The Game ($29.99)
Security systems have failed and the creatures of the park roam free. Now, a rogue corporation will stop at nothing to acquire the embryos stolen and lost by Dennis Nedry. Experience a brand new adventure and see new areas and dinosaurs in this landmark game set during the first Jurassic Park movie.
Hollywood Squares ($9.99)
Play with friends and family on the famous tic-tac-toe game board occupied by “center squares” Kathy Griffin, Brad Garrett, Martin Mull and Jeffrey Tambor! Host Tom Bergeron asks the celebrities questions, and you judge whether the answers are true or false.
BurgerTime World Tour ($9.99)
BurgerTime lives again! This culinary classic used to rip quarters from your pockets. Now it’s back but in Next-Gen form with 3D graphics on a rotating cylindrical axis in a whole new burger world. In fact, 4 new worlds! And 50 levels, four gargantuan boss characters, and up to 4-players, online!
Finally, a new PSone Classic, Vanguard Bandits, will be added to the PS Store. The availability of this JRPG has surely broken the hearts of eBay sellers everywhere as it’s been selling on the auction site for $100-$200.
To get the full flavor of this week’s PlayStation Store update, including more details on these games and all of the new add-ons, head on over to the PlayStation.Blog.

Nintendo, Penny Arcade team up for Zelda: Skyward Sword comic
To celebrate the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (just five more days!), Nintendo has teamed up with the boys from Penny Arcade to create a five-panel Skyward Sword comic.
Starting today, new panels will appear every week at the official Skyward Sword website.
“I was 14 when I first played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past,” said Penny Arcade artist Mike Krahulik. “That was 20 years ago, and today I am introducing my son to The Legend of Zelda. The opportunity to work with Nintendo to create a Zelda comic is not only an incredible honor, but quite literally a childhood dream come true.”

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge is the first Wii U launch title
The Wii U is still shrouded in mystery, but the first launch title has been announced and it’s not what you’d expect.
Instead of an announcement from Nintendo concerning the latest adventure starring Mario or Link or even Samus Aran, the announcement of the first Wii U launch title has come from Tecmo Koei. During a financial presentation, the publisher revealed that Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge will be available at the Wii U’s launch (whenever that is). Nintendo plans to “re-introduce” the Wii U to the public at E3 2012, so a Fall release is likely.
Ninja Gaiden 3 is also in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and will be released on those two platforms in early 2012.
