New Releases: L.A. Noire, The Witcher 2, Fable III PC, More

Put on your detective hat as we go searching for clues to this this week’s new releases.

The biggest new game of the week is Rockstar Games’ L.A. Noire. An ambitious story of murder and traffic violations in 1940s Los Angeles, L.A. Noire has been a long time in the making and has the makings of changing the way we look at games with its facial cues game mechanic.

To counteract the juggernaut that is L.A. Noire, two major PC games are also being released this week: CD Projekt’s RPG The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and the PC version of Peter Molyneux’s Fable III.

Check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

Mortal Kombat decapitates the competition in April NPD report

It’s no secret that the video game community has responded to NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat reboot with a resounding “I love it.” But like Shao Kahn taunting a clearly inferior kombatant, the game also emerged on top of The NPD Group’s April 2011 sales report. And according to a tweet from Kombat creator Ed Boon, the game sold over 1,000,000 copies during the month. Flawless victory indeed.

April 19’s other big release, Portal 2, teleported its way to the top of the list with a strong #2 showing. Of course, it’s important to point out that a good portion of Portal 2’s sales were digital downloads through Steam, which isn’t counted by the NPD.

But the biggest surprise from last month’s top ten might be the absence of Sony’s SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs. The online shooter was also released on April 19th, one day before hackers took down the PSN. The service has yet to return and its offline status definitely contributed to SOCOM 4’s lackluster sales.

Hit the jump for the complete top ten of April’s bestselling games. (more…)

This means war! Modern Warfare 3’s story, multiplayer, more leaked

WARNING! SPOILERS BELOW!

Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of a dozen Activision executives crying their eyes out over the massive amount of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 information that leaked onto the Internet this morning.

Kotaku was the lucky recipient of this intel, which includes details on the game’s story, multiplayer modes & maps, concept art, and a whole lot more.

Kotaku’s sources confirm the developer triple team of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software are hard at work on Modern Warfare 3. The three teams have come together to create a globe-hopping game that follows up directly from the end of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. All of the loose story threads and the fates of every major character from the first two games will be wrapped up in MW3 along with introducing two new Delta Force operatives: “Frost” and “Sandman.”

This video is a travelogue of all the places you’ll go in Modern Warfare 3 and “how you’ll kill.” Opening with a Russian invasion of New York City, the two-minute video shows the Stock Exchange under siege, a battle on the Hudson River, a terrorist attack in London, fighting in Berlin, spelunking in Parisian sewers and the aftermath of an attack by a Somali warlord. The game’s final fight is said to take place in Dubai.

As far as multiplayer modes go, the well-loved Spec Ops mode returns in based “Mission” and “Survival” (AKA Horde) flavors.

Finally (and perhaps most importantly), Kotaku was able to nail down a release date for Modern Warfare 3: November 8, 2011.

GTTV reveal shows first video, screenshots of Starhawk

The latest “worst kept secret in gaming” debuted on GameTrailers TV last night as LightBox Interactive wowed gamers with Starhawk for the PS3. Rumors of the Warhawk sequel first emerged back in 2009, so it’s safe to say that Lightbox has been working on Starhawk for a long time.

As expected, Starhawk looks an awful lot like Warhawk in space, specifically a planet teeming with “Rift Energy” called The Frontier. Rift Energy is a hugely powerful substance, but it is also highly toxic and can infect you with a mysterious disease if you’re careful. This backstory leads into a battle between the “Rift Miners” and “The Outcasts” over Rift Energy that features futuristic weaponry and transforming fighter jets. You might say there’s more than meets the eye to the game’s setting.

The GTTV reveal was light on the details (presumably we’ll learn more at E3 next month), but we do we have the first five screenshots, which you can find after the break. (more…)

Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy kollected on PSN, XBLA

Has the new Mortal Kombat released you from its bloodstained grip yet? Are you ready for more battles against Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn and Goro? How about if they’re fights from the franchise’s “klassic” days?

If you said yes, then prepare to say “Toasty!” all over again as WB Games has announced they’ll be bringing Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade by the end of Summer. Developed by Other Ocean, the game will kollect the arcade editions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 into one download.

“We are very excited to finally have the first three Mortal Kombat games available in one download package for long-time and new fans to play,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “With the release of our 2011 Mortal Kombat, and its return to 2D game play, players have been asking for these classic titles and we are happy to deliver them.”

The Kollection will be available to download for $9.99 (or 40 quarters or 800 Microsoft Points). Or, if you’d prefer to get it for free, a download code will come bundled with PDP’s new Mortal Kombat Klassic Fight Stick. The arcade-style stick will be sold in PS3 and Xbox 360 versions at GameStop (and gamestop.com) for a suggested price of $129.99. It’s a “limited run,” so pre-order it now if you want it.

3DS eShop update pushed back to June 6

Nintendo has released a short statement concerning the release date of the 3DS’ “eShop Update.” According to The Big N, the system update that will activate the eShop will now take place on June 6th, not in late May as previously planned.

Interstingly, Nintendo specified that the update would be pushed out sometime in the evening of June 6th, which is a few hours after the company’s E3 press conference.

Call me optimistic, but I think Nintendo has something big related to the 3DS update planned for their press conference at this year’s E3 Expo.

Creative Assembly working on Alien game

They say that in space, no one can hear you scream. But on Earth, that sound you hear is the utter shock of Alien fans as Sega has revealed they’re working on another game based on the series.

The development reins for this untitled Alien game have been handed to The Creative Assembly, a team best known for the Total War series of strategy games. So is Total War: LV-426 in the works? We don’t know because, actually, Sega doesn’t want to talk about the game’s genre just yet.

Instead, the publisher and developer prefer to talk about how awesome their untitled, officially unannounced game will be. Creative Assembly’s Creative Director, Mike Simpson, told CVG that Sega told him to make an “award-winning” game. While Sega West CEO Mike Hayes said, “We want this to be a peer to the likes of Dead Space 2.”

Wow. Never let it to be said that Sega doesn’t dream big. OK, maybe the guys at Obsidian who were working on the now-canceled Alien RPG can say that.
