THQ delays UFC Trainer, cancels WWE Online, Company of Heroes Online

THQ has used their quarterly financial briefing to make a few changes to their upcoming release schedule.

First, the company’s PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 fitness title, UFC Personal Trainer, has been delayed. Previously scheduled for March, the game has now been tagged with a “TBA 2011” release date.

Next up, the publisher has cancelled the free-to-play online games Company of Heroes Online and WWE Online.

Finally, THQ CEO Brian Farrell touted some of the games the company does have scheduled for release in the near future: “[2011] will be driven by the strongest core games line-up in our history, including: Red Faction Armageddon, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, MX vs. ATV Alive and the newest installment of our Saints Row franchise.”

It’s unknown if he was referring to Saints Row: Drive-By on the 3DS or the currently unannounced Saints Row 3.

DICE cancels PC version of Battlefield 1943

Karl Magnus Troedsson, the General Manager at DICE, has used the Battlefield Blog to announce what we’ve all suspected for a while now: the PC version of Battlefield 1943 is dead. The developer has finally cancelled the oft-delayed shooter along with the PC version of the “Onslaught” add-on for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Battlefield 1943 was initially released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in July of 2009.

Troedsson cited the company’s desire to move forward as the reason for the cancellation, specifically moving on to Battlefield 3:

We know some of you eagerly have been awaiting Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Onslaught on PC. I’m sad to say that these two titles are now officially cancelled. Instead, our talented teams will focus on delivering the greatest possible gaming experience in our next behemoth release. We’re confident this will lead to an even better experience in Battlefield 3, not only on PC, but on all platforms.

EA working on “exciting” new FPS

Electronic Arts held their quarterly financial briefing yesterday and their CEO, John Riccitiello, revealed a small slice of the publisher’s 2011/2012 plans. Riccitiello has vowed to return EA to the top of the heap when it comes to first person shooters and he revealed that the company has a secret shooter in the works:

“This year, with the trail end of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 still doing well, Medal of Honor doing well, Crysis and Bulletstorm, we’re clearly going to make more progress on our goal, and that’s before we get to what I think is going to be a very exciting entry later in the year that we’re not yet announcing.”

The briefing also revealed that EA has three games planned for the 3DS launch window (The Sims 3, Madden NFL Football and FIFA Soccer) with a plan to release two of three alongside the 3DS hardware on March 27. This is our first confirmation of any 3DS launch day titles, even if it is still a bit of a guessing game.

Finally, EA used the briefing to gloat a bit. They announced that five of their 2010 releases, FIFA 11, Medal of Honor, Madden NFL 11, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, have all sold more than five million copies apiece. And even though it’s only been available for a week, EA also announced that Dead Space 2 has already sold two million copies, nearly doubling the sales figures of the first game.

Namco Bandai to publish Dark Souls, Armored Core V in America

Namco Bandai is teaming up with From Software to bring two of the developer’s most anticipated titles to North America. The Ridge Racer publisher has signed on to release Dark Souls in 2011 and Armored Core V in 2012.

Armored Core V is still over a year away, but From Software is promising that it will revolutionize the series with a stronger emphasis on tactics and geography that straight up shooting. The online multiplayer mode will also receive a facelift with team play and “huge battles on a global scale.”

Darks Souls is the spiritual sequel to From Software’s sleeper hit from 2009, Demon’s Souls. Like it’s predecessor, it’ll be an action RPG “set in a rich, dark fantasy universe.” But unlike it’s predecessor, it’ll be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. You can check out the game’s first trailer after the break. (more…)

Madden NFL 11 says Steelers will be Super Bowl XLV champs

EA Sports and the Madden NFL series have weighed in with their annual Super Bowl pick. In this year’s simulation, the Terrible Towels wiped the floor with the Cheeseheads 24-20 thanks to some last-second defensive heroics.

But the man most responsible for Pittsburgh’s simulated Super Bowl XLV victory was wide receiver Mike Wallace, who took home MVP honors after putting up 111 total yards and scoring a touchdown.

Highlights of the virtual contest between the Steelers and the Packers can be seen above including Ben Roethlisberger’s game-winning TD.

Gamblers take note, EA Sports has correctly picked the winner in six of the last seven Super Bowls.
