MS @ E3 12: Gears of War: Judgment coming next year

Microsoft just showed the debut trailer for Gears of War: Judgment at their E3 Press Conference. The game is looking pretty sharp as we see Augustus “Cole Train” Cole and Damon Baird lay waste to a whole horde of Locust.

We’ll have the trailer up soon, but we did learn that Gears of War: Judgment will launch sometime in 2013.

MS @ E3 12: EA Sports brings Kinect to FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13

Microsoft has ceded the stage of their E3 Press Conference to EA Sports, and the publisher is showing off the Kinect features of FIFA Soccer 13 and Madden NFL 13.

In FIFA, players will be able to set up passes and formations and even talk to their players on the field. But watch the potty mouth, as the Kinect sensor will pick up bad words and the on-screen referees won’t hesitate to hand out a red card for the offense.

The publisher showed off Madden with a little help from Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana (who’s apparently a traitor to his Sega roots). Players will be able to call plays, audibles, and targeted receivers. They’ll even be able to hike the ball with a “Hut, Hut, Hike!”

Montana was impressed.

MS @ E3 12: Fable: The Journey makes an appearance

The Kinect is getting a lot of airtime at this press conference, especially with Fable: The Journey.

Announced at last year’s E3 Expo, the new trailer showed a fantasy setting interspliced with a live-action player casting spells at enemies. It looks like players are going to get a major workout here, tossing fireballs at enemies and just generally getting their Harry Potter on.

Fable: The Journey will be available this Fall.

MS @ E3 12: New Splinter Cell unveiled, subtitled “Blacklist”

The new Splinter Cell game, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was shown at the Microsoft Press conference, and it’s gorgeous. Sam Fisher is back, this time on the Iran-Iraq Border. The game was shown off by Ubisoft and is in development by Ubisoft Toronto.

Sam is deadlier than ever, tearing through enemies fluidly with new maneuvers. He dances between them, pumping them with bullets smoothly, like a deadly ballerina: he can grab an enemy, spin him around, and pump two bullets in the chest and one in the head. That’s “killing in motion,” something that skilled players can master.

Brand new is Kinect voice command functionality. The player can call the enemy over and then grab him and pull him over the side – a move that married Solid Snake and Nathan Drake perfectly.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist will be out in Spring 2013.

Steampunk shooter Sine Mora soon to be seen on Vita

Even though it was published by Microsoft on the Xbox Live Arcade, Sine Mora, the steampunk shooter collaboratively developed by Digital Reality and Grasshopper Manufacture, will be coming to the PS Vita soon.

“When you’ve got a great game on your hands, there’s nothing you want to do more than share it with everyone,” said Balázs Horváth, director of publishing at Digital Reality. “We had a fantastic launch with Microsoft exclusively on Xbox LIVE Arcade, and we’re really excited to continue that on the Vita.”

In addition to the portability factor, the Vita version will receive an exclusive character: Wilhelmine Muller from G.rev’s Under Defeat. This crossover character will bring a unique special weapon and new chronomes to Sine Mora.

The side-scrolling shooter’s Vita debut wasn’t given a release date, Digital Reality and Grasshopper Manufacture are confident that it’ll appear on the handheld “soon.”

Rumor: Alan Wake 2 announcement imminent

With only hours before the start of E3, the air is electric with anticipation. And it was ramped up a notch with this mysterious tweet from Sam Lake, the lead writer of Alan Wake.

The link leads you to a blog called This House of Dreams, written by the ambiguous Samantha. While this has led to some speculation that there will be a character named Samantha in the next game, it could also be Sam Lake using the female form of his own name. The blog, created back in February, details Samantha’s life as she buys an old house to renovate. Fans of the game will discover several allusions to Alan Wake within the various posts.

Coupled with this treasure trove of mysteries is the fact that the domain registry information for the AlanWake2.com URL was updated on June 4. Is the update tied to a potential E3 reveal? We’ll find out soon enough.

Mega Man creator’s Soul Sacrifice is coming to North America

While Soul Sacrifice, the initial PS Vita offering from legendary video game creator and producer Keiji Inafune, was announced a few weeks ago for release in Japan, there was no word on other territories. However, fans will have no need to organise an Operation: Rainfall-esque mission, with the recent announcement that the game is set for release in North America. Inafune, or INAFKING as he likes to be credited, explained that the game will explore the themes of sacrifice and cruelty, which he associates with reality, in a fantasy setting.

“What I wanted to illustrate in this game was a “reality blended into a fantasy world.” The word “fantasy” normally points to a story that is fictitious; however, with Soul Sacrifice I wanted to illustrate a “reality” within a fantasy that wasn’t sugar-coated. It’s not about focusing on the strange, but to flip the commonly held concept of what a fantasy theme should be with the concept of “reality.”

Cruelty is a reality in our world, and we have to make sacrifices and pay costs on a daily basis. I wanted to blend this “reality” theme into a fantasy world, one filled with magic, and create a new type of gaming experience that relied on the player making sacrifices in order to obtain great power.

There is a “dark pleasure” lying in between fiction and reality that none of us knew was there. If you simply think of it as a “dark fantasy,” then your expectations will be betrayed – but in a good way. Please look forward to Soul Sacrifice. It will be a game that players around the world will surely enjoy.”

The game is being developed by Inafune’s new company, Comcept, who have tasked themselves with generating strong, original concepts and tackling what they have dubbed “Japan’s creative crisis.” The game will also feature music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Wataru Hokoyama, the former responsible for the amazing soundtrack heard in the criticall acclaimed Wii JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles.
