Rage will have 21-22 GB install on Xbox 360, PS3 install not yet determined
id Software Technical Director, John Carmack, dropped a bomb at Quakecon: Rage will have a 21-22 GB install on the Xbox 360. “On the 360 we don’t have a partial install option; it’s all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate,” Carmack said. “It means you have to install 21-22 GB of stuff which takes a long time, but if you’ve got it and you play it on the 360, that’s the way to go.”
That’s a lot of hard drive space to put aside for a game. Although it makes sense when you realize Rage requires two discs for the single-player campaign and a third disc for the multiplayer modes.
The problem doesn’t stop there, either – there are also latency issues on the PS3. “Once you get everything from memory that works pretty good, but if you’re coming straight from the hard drive then the first time you walk into everything from the DVD or from the Blu-ray – even worse in terms of total latency time – you listen to that Blu-ray churning around as it’s pulling everything in,” Carmack said. “It’ll be nice when we don’t have that physical element we don’t have to be working around or scheduling around.”
No word yet on whether or not the PS3 will have an install. Hopefully there will be an option for that, or else PS3 sales will certainly suffer.

Daily Scoop: August 8, 2011 – Tunic for Heroes
Oh, Monday. How you came up and stole the weekend away! But it’s ok, because I got to play a ton of video games all weekend, including some Borderlands and some co-op Portal 2. So bring it on, Monday!
Let’s see, what have we got today? Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games is Ubisoft’s CSI: Unsolved for the Nintendo DS. It’s on sale for just $9.99, so if you feel like solving some crimes with Morpheus Laurence Fishburne, now’s your chance!
Amazon’s also got new weekly deals in games. If you buy Disney Epic Mickey, you can get another Disney game for a total of $39.99. (My vote is always for Disney Sing It: Party Hits!) The other deal is $20.99 for Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor for the Nintendo DS.
No daily gaming shirts today, but I’m sort of loving 6 Dollar Shirts, especially this one: (more…)

BloodRayne: Betrayal delayed on XBLA
Although BloodRayne: Betrayal was supposed to come out in August simultaneously on the PSN and XBLA, it looks like PSN Play has thrown a wrench in the plans. Instead of coming out at the same time, it will be released on September 6 on the PSN, and not until October 5 on XBLA. Seeing as Microsoft has long had timed exclusivities in all manner of digital releases, it’s no surprise that Sony is starting to do the same.
Two other releases in the PSN Play, Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition and Renegade Ops, will still be released at the same time on both download services.

Sony announces their own Summer promotion: PSN Play

The Summer of Arcade has been a great way for Microsoft to launch new games on the Xbox Live Arcade over the last three years. So Sony has decided to hold a Summer promotion of their with the similarly themed PlayStation Network Play.
The promotion will begin on August 23 with the release of Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. But PS3 owners will actually be able to “pre-order” any PSN Play pick five days before each game is released (and they’ll receive a free theme as a bonus). Hothead’s DeathSpank sequel The Baconing; Majesco’s BloodRayne: Betrayal sidescroller; and Sega’s top-down vehicle combat game Renegade Ops round out the PSN Play lineup.
Like the Summer of Arcade, gamers who purchase every PSN Play offering will receive a free game. In this case, it’s Sony’s Payday: The Heist (which is scheduled for a Fall release). And that’s not all! Each game will also include exclusive DLC and PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive 20% off any of their Play purchases.
Sony has promised that the PSN Play promotion will be a yearly event, so start counting down to PSN Play 2012 now! Or get your fill of information for the 2011 lineup after the break. (more…)

Update on Doom 4… sort of
It seems that Doom 4 has been on the backburner lately with everyone’s focus on id Software’s new game coming out in October, Rage. But with Quakecon 2011 going on, people are curious about Doom 4.
Todd Hollenshead, President of id Software, had this to say: “Id Tech 5 is the basis for Doom 4, and I guess infer what you will… What we’re really focused on is getting Rage out the door. Once we’re to that point, then we want to transition to how we’re going to present Doom 4, what are the talking points, how do we introduce it. Because that stuff hasn’t even been determined yet. We’re talking about that internally.”
He added: “I know everybody’s interested. I am too.”
Huh. Thanks for the, uh… update? Hey, at least Rage looks awesome.

Rise of Nightmares “Red Band” trailer looks bloody fun
Sega has outdone themselves with their survival horror Kinect game, Rise of Nightmares. The new trailer is full of blood, gore, and hilarity. And just as I was thinking that this is a good move for Microsoft to try to get away from the Kinect kiddie game stigma, the trailer gives its two cents: “Not your usual family-friendly Kinect game, is it?” Ha!
Rise of Nightmares will be out on September 6 for the Xbox 360.
