Twisted Metal gets October 4 release date, new trailer

GameTrailers TV has unveiled a world premiere trailer for Twisted Metal and in addition to all of the explosions, gunfire and general mayhem, it also includes a release date. It looks like David Jaffe’s reboot of the classic car combat franchise will be released for the PS3 on October 4th.

There was previously some confusion over whether Twisted Metal would be released in the Spring or the Fall, so let’s hear it for Sony for finally picking a real release date for the game.

Anonymous suspends their campaign against Sony

The “hacktivism” group Anonymous has announced that they’ve suspended their campaign of online warfare against Sony due to the effect their efforts were having on innocent PS3 players. The denial of service attacks perpetrated by Anonymous caused outages on the PlayStation Network and blocked access to Sony-owned websites. These attacks were called off one day after a member of Anonymous referred to gamers as “collateral damage” in their war with Sony.

Anonymous’ statement reads, in part, as follows:

Anonymous is not attacking the PSN at this time. Sony’s official position is that the PSN is undergoing maintenance. We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea. We have therefore temporarily suspended our action, until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.

Anonymous is on your side, standing up for your rights. We are not aiming to attack customers of Sony. This attack is aimed solely at Sony, and we will try our best to not affect the gamers, as this would defeat the purpose of our actions. If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.

On our side or not, this latest round of statements doesn’t look like it’ll make gamers feel all warm and fuzzy towards Anonymous anytime soon.

SSX: Deadly Descents gets new title, gameplay details

Todd Batty, Creative Director of SSX: Deadly Descents, recently sat down with Game Informer to discuss the rebirth of the snowboarding series. During the interview he dropped new details like the number of mountains players will be able to shred down (at least 70) and revealed the game’s slimmed down title (it’s just called SSX now).

Batty also talked about the game’s three gameplay styles: Speed Descent (get down the mountain as fast as possible), Tricky Descent (perform as many tricks as you can) and Deadly Descent. In Deadly Descent mode the mountain literally fights back against the racers and, according to Batty, “the challenge will be just making it to the bottom alive.” This challenge will be amplified thanks to avalanches, rockslides and falling stalactites.

Tying together all of these death-defying drops are “Nine Deadly Descents,” which are based on the “Seven Summits” of the mountaineering world. Each descent is “themed by an environmental challenge and a cultural significance that makes [the] mountains unique from each other” and Batty considers them like boss battles.

To help players survive the elements, SSX will include a ton of new geat including wingsuits (for gliding after a jump) and pickaxes (to help NOT falling off the mountain). And all of this will come together through what Batty calls “a very strong multiplayer component.”

Capcom countdown points to Breath of Fire VI?

Capcom Japan has launched a countdown site for a new project they’re calling DD for now.

The countdown features a silhouetted dragon in the background and it’ll expire on April 12th. Coincidentally, the embargo on news from Capcom’s Captivate 2011 event (which is being held right now in Miami) will also expire on the 12th.

As for what the mysterious dragon and the “DD” refer to, we may have a lead on that as well. Andriasang translated a tweet from Breath of Fire V director Makoto Ikehara where he complains that the “DD” in the URL will lead gamers straight to Dragon’s Dogma, which Capcom filed a trademark for a few days ago.

Does that mean the clock is counting down to Breath of Fire VI: Dragon’s Dogma? There’s no way to be sure (short of crashing Captivate), but the clues point to yes.

Duke Nukem: Critical Mass trailer blasts onto the web

You thought Duke Nukem: Critical Mass was dead didn’t you? It’s OK, we all did. But after revealing that the DS side-scroller was alive and well last month, Apogee Software has released a new trailer ahead of the game’s release.

European gamers will get a chance to step into Duke’s alienkickers tomorrow, April 8th. Across the Atlantic in North America, we’ll have to wait until May.

Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard has a face for television

Thaaaat’s right. BioWare is pumping Mass Effect through every media vein available, including today’s announcement of a full-length anime movie. FUNimation and T.O. Entertainment will be working closely with EA and BioWare on the film, which “will bring [the] rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for.” The Mass Effect anime will be available on DVD and Blu-ray next Summer.

We at Warp Zoned generally love the Mass Effect games, but it seems that the continuous ventures through every available outlet may overwhelm some Mass Effect fans.

But hey, if this is what works for EA, then by all means, seize it, and go with it – especially if it means that Mass Effect 3 will be as well-crafted as Dead Space 2.

A tale of two platforms – Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns coming to DS, 3DS

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Actually, these are just some pretty good times, because Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns, the next chapter in Natsume’s legendary RPG/farm-sim series, will be releasing simultaneously on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS this Summer. The story centers on, yep, two villages who have grown apart since a vehement dispute over who has the best cooking. Players can choose start in the crop-oriented, Eastern flair of Konohana or the animal-loving European-style town of Bluebell. Who wants to take bets on if you marry someone from the other town?

Commenting on the dual platform, Hiro Maekawa, President and CEO of Natsume, stated “We wanted to ensure that all of our loyal Harvest Moon fans would have a chance to play this game,” presumably because of all the returned 3DS units following the horrible diseases it causes (sarcasm). “No matter which version they pick up, they’re sure to love the great new cast of characters, the fun festivals, and the exciting new gameplay mechanics.”

If only the Second Europan War in Valkyria Chronicles started over cooking. I’m sure there’d be a lot less ethnic cleansing.

Daily Scoop: April 7, 2011 – Nicole needs an Xbox 360

I’ve made a really important decision regarding my birthday, which was a month ago tomorrow. Which…will be a month ago tomorrow? Whatever. It’s not like I went to school for English, people. Anyway, I’ve quit drinking, and every time we have a birthday gathering, people want to buy me shots, so instead, I’m going to put out a small fishbowl with a sign that says something along the lines of “Nicole’s Xbox 360 fund.” Instead of dumping shots down my throat/tempting me with Irish Car Bombs, you can just drop a dollar in the fishbowl. How awesome is that? You’ll get to be an important part of my video game curriculum! Congratulations.

Speaking of the Xbox 360, today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is the Xbox 360 Sharkoon X-Tatic SX Stereo Gaming Headset by… Sharkoon. Shocking, I know. It’s $39.99 today down from $59.99, and is “sophisticated in design and technology” to give you “the crucial sound advantage for epic gaming sessions.” Wow! That just sounds…yes. Good.

Nothing in the daily t-shirt realm today, but I found this shirt that is ridiculously incredible and fully functional as an AR card today at Level Up Studios. Watch this amazing video:

O_o.
