New Shift 2 Unleashed screenshots bring the Pagani Zondas out of the garage

Slightly Mad Studios and EA released a couple shots today of the Pagani Zonda R and F models that will be appearing in the next game of their racing sim franchise, Shift 2: Unleashed. It’s no Gran Turismo, but you can expect this to be what the cars will actually look like during gameplay, and the cockpit view is impressive as always. Shift 2 will be available at retail on March 29.

Final Fantasy III flying via The Invincible to iPhone

Amidst a sudden burst of uncharacteristic coherence, Square Enix recently announced that Final Fantasy III is joining Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions as being currently in development for the iPhone. No further details were given, and many are curious if this will be in the style of the FFI & II iPhone games or if it’ll be a port of the Nintendo DS version. The latter would be considerably delightful, as the entire game was designed to be playable using the touchscreen. Expect FF3 to join the App Store later this year.

Oh, The Invincible is the name of the airship from FF3, in case you didn’t realize.

Pigs learn to fly, Xenogears coming to US PlayStation Network

It seems Square Enix is really starting to get it. Buried in the PlayStation Blog’s The Drop, surname-sharing Rey Gutierrez revealed that Xenogears will be this week’s addition to the PSOne Classics section of the PlayStation Store, when the digital service updates tomorrow. Xenogears came at the height of Square’s golden age on the original PlayStation, and is cited by many enthusiasts as the greatest RPG of all time. It also went on to serve as the template for Monolith Soft’s Xenosaga series on the PlayStation 2, after the core members of the original left Square in 1999.

This comes as a major blow to the second-hand market, where Xenogears can go for up to $150. After Tactics Ogre released last week as Square Enix’s first digital PSP title in what seems like forever, it appears the company may finally be in touch with its fan base again after years of superfluous remakes and bad Xbox 360 titles. Well, kinda.

Killzone.com launches career progression videos for Killzone 3’s classes

The PlayStation Network is set to be engulfed in the flames of war (or should I say Warzone) as Killzone 3 prepares for its North American launch tomorrow. To get players comfortable with the very deep class system of the game’s multiplayer, Killzone.com’s blog is hosting a series of videos on each class. The first one is the engineer, master of turret bots and the keyholder to emplaced weapons and ammo stockpiles. Guerilla’s Multiplayer Designer Dan Nanni explains the supportive nature of the engineer, detailing each of the class’ weapons and game-changing abilities. The rest of the classes should be up in the coming days so stay tuned for some intel that’s sure to come in handy out there.

The Legend of Zelda turns 25

February 21, 1986 was an important day in video game history. 25 years ago today The Legend of Zelda was released on the Famicom Disc System in Japan. The game would cross the Pacific and receive an NES release a year later.

Widely recognized as one of the greatest games of all-time, Link’s first quest set a new standard for action-adventure games and has been re-released multiple times over the years. It was the first game in a franchise that now includes 19 games with a 20th, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, set for release this year. It also came encased in an awesome gold cartridge that inspired many of the series’ pre-order bonuses over the years.

1UP has put together an amazing retrospective of the franchise including “The 25 Coolest Zelda Videos,” “25 Things You Didn’t Know About Zelda,” “25 Zelda Things You Didn’t Know Existed” and a whole lot more.

So happy anniversary to Link, Zelda, Ganon… even Navi.

Faxanadu added to Virtual Console

It may officially be a holiday (President’s Day), but the Nintendo Download definitely didn’t take the day off.

To celebrate they’ve added a new NES platformer, Faxanadu, to the Virtual Console. It’s joined by a pair of new WiiWare titles: Jewel Keepers: Easter Island, a puzzler; and Cozy Fire, a literal, virtual fire. A demo for the excellent Rage of the Gladiator (a fantasy fighter styled after Punch-Out!!) is also available this week.

Hit the jump for more details on all of these titles and the three new DSiWare games as well. (more…)

Daily Scoop: February 21, 2011 – Revenge of the Monday

Ah, Monday. Killer of weekends. Destroyer of worlds. Optimistic gamers can see it as one day closer to those new releases, but my half-empty glass perspective sees Monday as just another barrier, just another day to wait. But at least we’ll all be visiting Helghan again tomorrow. Am I right?

Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is Square Enix’s Lord of Arcana for the PSP. This is a relatively recent release (try saying that ten times fast), so $27.99 down from $39.99 is a pretty decent deal. Also of note is the return of Amazon’s Buy One, Get One 50% sale. Call me up when they’re buy one, get one free – I’ve already got so many games that the deal has to be one I can’t walk away from for me to even consider it right now.

If none of this is appealing and you still really want to spend $10, Tee Fury has you covered – or has your back – or has your back covered, I guess would be right:

Now That’s a Hammer, Bro!

Weekly Warp-Up: Play Me Off Johnny

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

In case you missed it, we’re giving away a download code for the Xbox Live Arcade version of Super Meat Boy. A winner will be chosen tomorrow, so now’s your last chance to win one of the best XBLA games of 2010.

Get Warp Zoned!
It wasn’t too surprising when Activision announced that they’re retiring the plastic instruments for 2011. So instead of an encore, we delivered A Eulogy For Guitar Hero and talked a little about how the series should change if it ever comes back. We also discuss the demise of the Hero franchise in Episode 4 of the Warp Zoned Podcast, along with a disturbing amount of Poke-love.

With the Hero franchise unplugged for the time being, Activision’s got their plate full with a bevy of licensed titles including a Spider-Man game scheduled for release this Fall. The company is also likely producing a game based on next year’s The Amazing Spider-Man film and we speculated on what that game might look like.

And speaking of speculation, we examined the State of the Video Game Magazine as of 2011 and discovered that the magazine may not be as dead as we all thought it was.

Hit the jump for the rest of the Weekly Warp-Up. (more…)
