How To Make the Perfect Sonic the Hedgehog Game

Now that Sega has announced a 20th anniversary celebration for Sonic the Hedgehog, 2011 may well prove to be an important year for their spiky blue mascot (we’ll likely get a new game out of it at least). But despite Sega’s best efforts, every gamer – casual or otherwise – knows that there hasn’t been a good Sonic the Hedgehog game made since 1994; Sonic 4 may carry on the series, but the first episode still didn’t feel perfectly right. Kirby’s Epic Yarn Review: A Game That Doesn’t “Suck!”

At E3 2010, Nintendo’s press conference included a slew of long-awaited titles for the Wii, including the likes of Donkey Kong Country Returns and Epic Mickey. Kirby’s Epic Yarn joined that list, and with its release, it is clear that Nintendo carefully stitched together a modern-day masterful performance. Side-scrolling gameplay is back, and Kirby is here to prove it! (more…)

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Review: Starkiller Strikes Back in a By-the-Numbers Sequel

When it was released back in 2008, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was met with stinging jabs from the critical community. Some of the game’s oft-mentioned flaws included repetitive combat, a poor camera, lame boss fights and a nearly broken targeting system. I did not share my compatriot’s problems with the game and actually found The Force Unleashed to be one of the better action-adventures of 2008.

But here we go again with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II. (more…)

Fable III Review: This Revolution Will Be Televised

Thanks to the never-ending hubris of Peter Molyneux, the Fable franchise has constantly fought for respect from gamers. Both Fable and Fable II were solid and enjoyable role-playing games, but the quality of the games was greatly overshadowed by pre-release hype – the kind of hype that makes for a game that can never live up to the expectations. This is likely why Fable III seemed to sneak in through the back door in 2010’s busy Q4 – to avoid the same kind of attention that doomed the first two games. Does this more muted release make much of a difference in the long run? Well… (more…)

Doritos Crash Course Review: John Henson Would Be Proud

Doritos Crash Course is, unsurprisingly, this year’s Doritos-sponsored Xbox Live Arcade freebie (along with Harm’s Way, a driving game/tower defense hybrid). The game takes the form of an extreme obstacle course that mashes together elements of Wipeout, Nickelodeon’s Guts and The Eliminator from American Gladiators. Best of all, the character you control on this side-scrolling course is your own Avatar. (more…)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam Review: I Love the Smell of DLC in the Morning

Kicking off last year with the stellar Battlefield: Bad Company 2, EA closed it out by dropping the Vietnam expansion. Building upon already incredibly strong shooter mechanics, Vietnam reinforces the formula with another fantastic set of maps brought to life with the sights and sounds definitive of the era. (more…)

Lost In Shadow Review: Not As Solid As I’d Hoped

Lost In Shadow was released last week by Hudson Entertainment to a lousy critical reception. My initial reaction was surprise – I’d played a few hours of the game and so far, I really loved it. But as I continued on, I started to see many of the problems mentioned by other reviewers, and even found a few reasons of my own to be frustrated by the unnecessarily prolonged experience that is Lost In Shadow. (more…)

Donkey Kong Country Returns Review: Swingin’ Into Greatness

Watch out! Phew, that was a close one. Who’s throwing barrels, anyway? Oh wait, is that… Donkey Kong? He’s back! This time, he’s finally not flying a barrel jetpack, playing bongos, or brawling with other Nintendo characters. Do you know what this means? Donkey Kong finally has his own full game on the Wii! Now, dodging Nintendo’s legal department, it’s safe to say: It’s on like Donkey Kong! (more…)
