Warpback: What We Played in January 2012

January of 2012 wasn’t as impressive as it has been the last few years, but we here at Warp Zoned didn’t let that get us down. We were still busy playing demos, getting excited about the future, and – as always – digging through our backlogs to clear space on our shelf for all those new games. Read on to find out exactly what we played in the post-holiday gaming season. (more…)

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Hands-On Preview: The Elder Fable of War Effect

Imagine, if you will, that there was an action RPG that incorporated elements from games such as God of War, Fable, The Elder Scrolls series, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Now imagine that the development of this game involved Ken Rolston, the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the lore of fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore, and the art of Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn. Well, imagine no longer! Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is on its way and is ready to drown you in an amalgam of role-playing goodness. Amy Review: A Disease-Ridden Corpse of a Game

Is the Resident Evil series just a little too action-packed for your tastes today? Was your last trip to Silent Hill not the homecoming you thought you wanted? In other words, do you miss old-fashioned survival horror like your undead grandma used to make?

Amy, a new downloadable title from developer VectorCell and publisher Lexis Numerique, wants to fill that void. But take my advice, treat Amy like the disease-ridden zombies you’ll be fighting throughout the game and run away as fast as you can. (more…)

Resident Evil Revelations Hands-On Preview: In Which We See A Lot of Jill’s Rear End

The Resident Evil franchise reaches back a long way, all the way back to the original PlayStation era. Resident Evil Revelations is yet another addition in this long line of Capcom’s survival horror games. It is the eighth game in the main series, and the second overall on the 3DS. It handles smoothly on the handheld, looks great in 3D, and shows off Jill Valentine’s better assets. But is it actually an enjoyable experience? (more…)

Scarygirl Review: Be Afraid, Be Wary & Afraid

The undead have become a very popular go-to target in media lately, and it seems like every game, movie, and kids’ birthday party has at least one. Luckily, creative minds sometimes venture outside the box, or at least open the box and take a peek out. That’s sort of the theme of the graphic novel that Tik Games has shaped into their latest platformer, Scarygirl. This game blends a pseudo-2D/3D platformer feel with a bit of a hack and slash vibe to stitch together a copy of Frankenstein’s monster that is not unlike a mix between the older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle arcade games and LittleBigPlanet. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review: Motion-Controlling Hyrule’s Destiny

2011 was definitely the Year of Zelda. The franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary with symphonies, re-releases of previous Zelda games on handhelds, a swanky display in the Nintendo World Store in New York City, and the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It is the first true console Zelda game since The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and was promised to take full advantage of the Wii’s capabilities. With the addition of the Wii MotionPlus support, does Skyward Sword live up to all of the hype? Or will we wish to play the Song of Time and be whisked away to an era of better Zelda games? (more…)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Hands-On Preview: What’s Old, What’s New, and What’s Fantastic

There’s a lot to love about what Square Enix has shown us so far in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Many fans complained about the linearity of the first one, as well as the fact that there were no towns (in a Final Fantasy game? Sacrilege!). Fans didn’t like the Paradigm Shift system and thought the Eidolons were pointless. I tend to disagree with much of what’s been said – I love Paradigm Shifting, and enjoyed the story and the aesthetic of Final Fantasy XIII. Much of what made the first game strong is still there, but there are a lot of new features that may reignite faith in what some consider to be a hackneyed franchise. (more…)
