Driver: San Francisco Hands-On Preview: Tanner the Body Snatcher

The Driver franchise has struggled mightily in the years since its 1999 debut. While the original game was a bonafide PlayStation classic, the successors to that title have ranged from decent (see Driver: Parallel Lines) to atrocious (the infamous Driver 3, take a bow!). For 2011’s Driver: San Francisco, developer Reflections and new publisher Ubisoft are going back to basics — it’s a straight up open-world driving game with racing, chases, and… post-coma body shifting. There’s a lot of interesting ideas at hand here, and after spending time with the brand new demo, I’m very curious as to how the final product will turn out. This could be the fresh start the series has needed for over a decade. (more…)

Naughty Bear: Gold Edition Review: Because Playtime Is Far From Over

It’s the summer, and you know what that means. It means it’s time for swimming, picnics, and outdoor parties. What if your friends all got invited and you didn’t? Well, there’s someone you may relate to. His name is Naughty, and he’s a little angry about a similar situation. Turn on your controller and take your aggression out on Naughty’s “friends” – because for $30, it’s easier and cheaper than winding up with a dozen lawsuits for your friends’ hospital bills. Naughty Bear: Gold Edition is a simple game, but don’t underestimate it. (more…)

F.E.A.R. 3 Review: Being Scared Was Never This Fun

F.E.A.R. 3 is the latest installment in the F.E.A.R. series, which stands for First Encounter Assault Recon – although it doesn’t really seem like anyone cares what it stands for anymore, seeing as that hasn’t really been relevant since the first game. While not helmed by the original developers – Day 1 Studios has taken over for Monolith Productions – the latest in the popular horror franchise still has the same spirit as the two original games.

The most interesting addition to the family gameplay is co-op – players can either play the campaign alone as Point Man and unlock his brother, Paxton Fettel, as they go through each chapter, or they can play the game cooperatively with a friend either online or from their couch. Couch co-op has never been so fun – or so terrifying. The main fear I had was that Day 1 Studios wouldn’t be able to deliver, but I’m happy to announce that they’ve given birth to something… well, something more beautiful than what’s about to come out of Alma Wade, for certain. Shadows of the Damned Review: An Overshadowed Gem… Packed to the Rim with Dirty Jokes

Suda 51 has a tentative grasp on reality at the best of times. The stark-raving mastermind behind Killer 7 and No More Heroes would like to invite you along for a trip into the underworld with his friends: a Mexican demon hunter named Garcia F***ing Hotspur and his disembodied skull sidekick named Johnson. Shadows of the Damned is the most grounded Suda 51 has ever been. Is that a bad thing? Certainly not. Grounded for him means marking save points with a defecating demon named One-Eyed Willy and assuming you know that goats are a protective light source. Like I said… grounded. (more…)

Catherine Review: Do Cheaters Dream of Neurotic Sheep?

Catherine is the latest game from the twisted minds over at Atlus, who are responsible for the Persona series as well as a plethora of other bizarre games. An amalgam of strange and uniquely Japanese concepts and story twists, I assumed Catherine would either go down in the history books as a revolutionary game, or fall short and be simply categorized as weird. It turns out to be more of the latter than the former, but still has many redeeming qualities – and compelling reasons to play. (more…)

Warp Zoned: The eMagazine
Issue #3 – July 2011

Download It in EPUB Format Here

July was a bit of a “catch-up” month as the staff pored over some of the Summer’s biggest games including Alice: Madness Returns, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, InFamous 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. To continue with the “catch-up” theme, we even took a look at “Five Games That Deserve a Second Chance.” But we also took an early look at a trio of games that are sure to captivate a ton of people later this year in Catherine, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and the PS3-exclusive No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise.

Game publishers are also looking to the future and none more so than Nintendo. The Big N announced a price drop for the 3DS in July and many have pegged it as a desperation move for a handheld that has the stink of a flop on it. But we examined why the 3DS price drop may not be as crazy as it looks.

The Next Level: The Games of August 2011

Just 31 more days. That’s all that remains between the doldrums of August and the dam-breaking flood of new games coming this Fall. But that’s not to say that August doesn’t have a few important titles of its own. And the Warp Zoned staff is ready to dive into this month’s new releases and find those hidden gems (oh, and the juggernaut that is John Madden). (more…)

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon Review: The Only Good Bug is a Dead Bug

In certain corners of the Internet, you’ll find a group of gamers who are very enthusiastic about Earth Defense Force 2017, a budget third-person shooter released in the early days of the Xbox 360. The game featured poor graphics and some absolutely baffling gameplay choices, including several mazelike underground levels and terrible vehicle control. But it has also developed a cult following due to its insane enemy count and the awesomely arcadey “kill ’em all” vibe that runs through the action. Four years later, D3 Publisher has finally seen fit to release a sequel, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. Can they catch lightning in a bottle twice? Well, they did name the main character Lightning Alpha… (more…)
