Shigeru Miyamoto stepping down as Managing Director of Nintendo

Shigeru Miyamoto has guided the good ship Nintendo for 30 years now, practically since the beginning of the company’s forays into video games. But now, after creating Donkey Kong, Mario, Link, Star Fox, the Pikmin, and countless others, the famed developer is stepping down from his position as Managing Director of Nintendo EAD.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,'” Miyamoto told Wired. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”

Miyamoto still plans to work for Nintendo and he still plans to develop new games, but he also revealed that he plans to move on to smaller projects, possibly even something he can do by himself:

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

Work on this new project will likely begin in 2012, and Miyamoto told Wired that he’d like to show the game off publicly after a year.

You know how people are always going on about something insignificant being “the end of an era?” This announcement is truly the end of an era. It’s my belief that no one has done more for video games than Shigeru Miyamoto and his absence from the grand stage will be felt for decades to come.

But, to paraphrase the man himself, even if it’s delayed forever, I’m sure his next project will be great.

Activision unveiling Amazing Spider-Man trailer at Spike TV VGAs

Activision released the first gameplay trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man during the New York Comic-Con (check it out above). Today, they’ve announced that a “WORLD PREMIERE EXCLUSIVE TRAILER” (emphasis theirs) for the game will make its debut during this Saturday’s Spike TV Video Game Awards.

Sadly, it’ll probably end up being the same trailer as a teaser at the game’s official website features footage identical to the Comic-Con trailer.

But we’ve also learned that screenwriter Seamus Kevin Fahey will be crafting the story of the Beenox-developed game, which will take place after the events of the new movie. His previous credits include episodes of “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

Gamers will be able to websling all around an open world Manhattan next Summer, when The Amazing Spider-Man comes to the 3DS, DS, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360.

Nintendo Download: More House and more Adventure Island

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like a new episode in the House M.D. adventure game series and another version of Adventure Island are a part of the Nintendo Download every other week.

The two game franchises tag team this week’s Nintendo Download as House M.D. Episode 5: Under the Big Top has been added to the DSiWare Shop and the Game Boy version of Adventure Island is now available on the 3DS eShop.

Here’s what else you’ll be able to download from the DSiWare Shop, 3DS eShop and Wii Shop this week:

House M.D. Episode 5: Under the Big Top (DSiWare) – Dr. Gregory House and his elite diagnostic team race against the clock to unravel a medical mystery involving a middle-aged circus manager who is strangled by a horse.

Adventure Island (3DS eShop) – Master Higgins’ princess has been kidnapped, and he is the only one who can save her. To aid in his search, he’ll need to equip his skateboard and use a variety of weapons as he fights his way through eight different worlds.

Xmas Puzzle (WiiWare) – Xmas Puzzle is a game in which you must solve progressively more difficult puzzles as you advance through the plot. As many as four friends or family members can enjoy playing at the same time.

Double Bloob (DSiWare) – Double Bloob is a cartoonish, arcade-style vertical shooter. The planet needs you! Bloobs have invaded the Earth and took a little dolphin named Will as a hostage! Don’t let the Bloobs win!

New Releases: Mario Kart 7, Assassin’s Creed Revelations for PC, NatGeo Challenge

With December upon us, the Fall gaming rush has come to a close as only a handful of titles are left to be released in 2011. But one of those games is also one of the biggest games of the year, Mario Kart 7. The first “numbered” Mario Kart sequel also adds a number of other new features to the series including karts with hang gliders, underwater tracks, and first-person tilt controls.

Also available in stores this week is the PC version of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and the PS3/Wii/Xbox 360 trivia contest National Geographic Challenge!

I’m thankful for Metroid II’s release on the 3DS eShop today

It may be hard to believe, but once upon a time, Nintendo didn’t consider Samus Aran one of their premier characters. After Metroid‘s release on the NES back in 1987, it took a full four years before Metroid II: Return of Samus was released. Another mark of the franchise’s second-class status was that it wasn’t released for Nintendo’s cutting edge Super NES or the aging NES, but as a black-and-white Game Boy game.

However, Return of Samus contained all the great Metroid action that fans of the NES original loved and it paved the way for Super Metroid, the Prime series, and the all the rest of Samus’s adventures. And now you can download it on your 3DS.

Here’s what else Nintendo has planned for this week’s Nintendo Download:

Battle of the Elements (DSiWare) – Get ready to travel around the world facing the most powerful characters in intense battles of elements, where you’ll need to think as fast as you move your stylus in order to earn the victory.

Come On! Heroes (DSiWare) – This action game tests your reactions. The “Lovely Heiress” is being held for ransom. Mr. King announces that anyone who brings back his daughter will receive a great reward.

Big Bass Arcade (WiiWare) – Big Bass Arcade is loaded with fishing action. Catch a boatload of fish and take a shot at the World Record Bass. Compete in Challenges and Tournaments, or Free Fish any lake at your own pace.

More information on all of these titles can be found within the Nintendo Download Weekly Newsletter.

New Mario Kart 7 trailer is comfort food for Thanksgiving Eve

The latest Mario Kart 7 trailer looks like every other trailer released for the game so far. But you know what? That doesn’t bother me. The racers may be familiar, but there are also new ones like Shy Guy and Metal Mario). The tracks may be familiar, but 16 new tracks will also be available. And the items may be familiar, but you’ll also be able to bash opponents with Donkey Kong’s Hammer.

Isn’t that comforting familiarity (and awesome newness) exactly what you want out of Mario Kart? Mario Kart 7 will be released exclusively for the 3DS on December 4.
